Hi! am polishing volvo s60 2002 and its just a single stage polish (had to remove orange peel from hood, lots of it), am using white pad and #2 3m compound and when i polished doors, i noticed that not all scrathes were removed, the scrathes are not deep just a small ones, its still has like 30-40% of scrathes left. Am a noob and i need some advise, am polishing at slow speeds. thanks

It's hard to say what the problem is. How many passes did you try? I'm assuming you're using a rotary? It just takes time, technique, and knowing which products to turn to when others don't give the results. Pics would also help in the future when trying to retain solutions to visual problems.

Well Lake Country makes white pads. 3m however has 6 digit numbers on their polishes. If its a single stage than you do not need to worry about the remaining scratches. The whole point of a single stage polish is to enhance the finish rather than fully correct which makes it a cheaper detail(typically). My only question is how do you plan to remove orange peel without wetsanding? You will be polishing that hood for days....

Your going to need more than 1 step for that:xyxthumbs I really am not sure what to tell you. Being that you say your a newb my advice would be do not wetsand! Typically follow wetsanding with something serious like wool and Megs 105, or Menz Power gloss at high speeds( 2000rpms or so). My best suggestion to you is to really research what you are doing. If you wetsanded what scratches are left? Did you inflict scratches with the sand paper?

wet sanding+1 stage polishing=bad results. you need at least 2, maybe 3 steps. sounds like the pad you are using is too rough to get the finer scratches out.

First, cutting with 2500 and then 3000 leaves a finer scratch than some of the normal wear and tear scratches the paint might have all ready had. (RIDS) You might be looking at those now you've polished the paint.

Second, 2500 followed by 3000 is such a fine scratch that if you'd used a wool pad with just about any decent cutter you'd have nothing but swirls left. So, I think you should do what Aesop F1 said but with don't run the speed up so high till you get the feel of it. 1200 will take a little more time but it'll be safer. Look around here for tutorials.

The other thing you might have done is grind debris into your paint. Next time, be sure and clay the car before you sand and soak your paper at least over night and be careful not to run your paper parallel to the edge of your block. Cut diagonally because the edge is a high pressure point and will gouge or grove if you run parallel to it.
