Polishing Thin Spots??

Hey everyone, I finally ordered a PC! Will be here tomorrow!

I have a quick question thats been bothering me lately? Ive done searches but came up short.

How do you guys machine polish parts of the car like the door panel above the driver/passenger windows? You know that area thats like an inch wide? or wheel flares that are an inch and a half wide? Your help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance

Jim

I just use the outer portion of the pad or even the actual outer edge. You need to be a little careful doing this (and I wouldn't recommend it with a rotary), but the PC is pretty mild and it works OK for me. I've found I can do all sorts of risky sounding stuff with no problems as long as I'm working on a vehicle with normal paint thickness.

Cool,

Thanks Accumulator, Ill give that a shot. Do you still run it at a high speed (5-6) when using the edge of the pad?

Thanks again for the insight

Jim

they sell 3" backing plates. excel has their propel turbo kits that include this small backing plate. autogeek, PAC, and pakshak also carry these smaller pads (im sure others do to, but i just havent looked)

yep, just use the supplied wrench thingy that was included in the PC's package to hold the nut still and just twist the backing plate off and twist on a new one. takes about 15 seconds to change a backing plate.

Thanks for the help Neothin, I think ill order the plate and pads this weekend, looking forward to the first machine polishing of my car!

Thanks again

Jim

You are going to love your first time! I would just suggest (like neothin) that you tape off all the rubber and metal. I did that the first time and I was really glad that I did, because I was just starting to get used to its power. I really didnt know as much and i didnt have the technique down quite right so the PC would sometimes go where it wanted to and I was glad that I had all that plastic taped up. This helped so that I didn't have to waste time by stopping the PC, whiping off the wax/polish from the rubber, trying to get off the polish that you let dry too long because you were busy with the rubber situation, and starting all over again with the polishing.

Yeah, I still polish at 5-6 even when doing weird stuff. And they're right, you oughta get the smaller plate and pads. But you'll still find yourself using the big pad's edge. Sometimes it'll reach into spots that the smaller pads just can't do.

Thanks for the help guys, Ive got a practice car I will be doing tomorrow! Cant wait, Ill take some pics and post results

Wish me luck

Jim
