Polishing Question

I am using a PC and Menzerna polishes with the Excel/Sonus Green pad.

When I first started and the pad was still relatively dry the pad ended up buffing the polish off. After the pad was loaded with product it would break the polish down to a fine smear over the entire surface. Is this what I want? (this was only on the bumper BTW....not the entire car)

All I remember is my dad using a rotary with a wool pad back in the day and him saying the true cutting action didn't come until you basically cut the rest of the polish off the finish.

Thanks guys:cool:

If you are using the correct amount of polish, there will be very little residue to remove after your done buffing. You need just enough to lubricate the pad. You would not want to buff if the pad is dry. Usually you can feel when there is no more polish lubricating the pad.

Br's correct. Dont buff with a dry pad. Your not doing the surface any favors. Make sure you have the pad lubricated. One trick you can use when in the beginning stage of polishing, with a dry pad, is to give it a couple squirts of QD, until the product has a chance to impregnate the pad.

with a spritz or 2 of water prior to applying the polish. I've been using the Menzerna products for 2 years now (PG, IP, FP, FP II, PO85RD) and that is how to prevent the product from drying out to quickly on the pad.

Thanks guys. So the slight haze after I'm got going was exactly what it should be doing...correct? It did feel like the pad was lubricated. The residue came off very easy with a microfiber cloth.

I knew about the QD but just forgot about it when starting...DOH! I'll make sure to do that next time.

Nice ! I always spritz the surface as I am buffing with an ISA/water combo to prolong the breakdown process and to gain that last bit of polishing action. This seems to increase the gloss and smoothness noticeably:xyxthumbs
