Polishing a 08 lexis

This person calls me the other day and tells me he would like me to remove some swirl marks on his New I.S left behind by the dealer. I asked if this way the only thing he wanted done? He said yes. I offered to Vac and wipe out the interior. I explained to him that I would be doing a 2 step via the DA M105/M205. Blah blah the whole thing. I quoted him $175 and told him more or less what it would take. He was all for it. We set a date and on the day off he never answered his phone or called me back.

This all happened about 2 weeks ago. I was doing the persons car who told him about me and he asked me how it turned out. I told him what happen. He texted the person and they told him I was expensive. I live in Sanford FL. Do you guys think this is a lot of money to charge? Maybe it's just me?!?!?!?!?!? IDK. I think for me to get a cars paint perfect again it should warrant a good price.

Thanks for looking.

I can't say whether or not you're "too expensive", as I don't know your market area. However, with that said, your price doesn't seem too crazy to me, actually I find it a bit on the cheap side.

My bigger issue with this customer is that they told you yes, let's get it done, then didn't have the common courtesy to call you or somehow let you know that they had changed their mind. This customer wasted your day, where you were expecting to work on their vehicle, which is extremely rude. Then the customer talks trash about you being too expensive ?

Ignore this incident. There are some people that you just can't please, end of story, chalk this one up as one of those experiences.

Yeah that's pretty much what I'm doing.

I don't think he was talking trash. I think he just wanted to let my customer know what happen.

I was just pissed at the fact that I set the day aside for him and he just never called me up. When I had pushed other work out.

tell him to give you call after the other detailer (if he decides to go with someone else) is done with it, so you can check it out. chances are it will be hacked and then he'll wish he would of went with you in the first place. another thing to remind a customer is if they have it done somewhere else and it's not done incorrectly, is that will be more paint removed to remove the defects, which could of been avoided if it was done right in the first place. you know the saying, "you get what you pay for" and it definitely applies to automotive detailing...

LOL yeah I hear you! I'll keep that in mind. I was giving him a low ball price too! I'm not trying to target that kinda market anyways. If you can't pay what it's worth then ohh well I guess I don't need your business.

the story of some of our lives. I get the thats to expebsive line as well. there are just some people you cant please and definitely some you just don't want as customers. to me that is pretty much on the low side. then again that's not bad for just a 2 step without the vacuum and so on.

people are cheap sometimes abd just don't understand why it takes so much effort and time to complete a detail when the $7 car wash does it in 5 min.

detailing is tedious work and is mainly for the protecting of cars along with having it properly taken care of and cleaned. people will either want to pay cheap for a 1/2 *** job or want the worlds greatest detail foe dirt cheap.

sorry to hear that happened. if he ever calls back make sure to collect a deposit.

LOL if he calls back I will charge him $250 and then tell him I want a deposit! I guess there is a lot I need to learn when it comes to covering my azz. Oh well on to the next horror story! :)

Why would the OP do that ? Even if the other detailers did hack it, and the OP could point out the defects, all it's going to look like is that the OP is bitter about not getting the job, so he's picking apart another person's work. The client isn't going to take the OP seriously, so, to be quite honest, who cares ? I wouldn't waste another 5 seconds on that client, who wasted the OP's ENTIRE day and didn't even bother to call and cancel (or better yet, had the guts to even pick up the phone when the OP tried to call him and find out what was going on).

Seriously, I would just leave it in the past and forget about it.

true, but there could be a chance that the customer may not be happy with the previous detailer's work, if he decided to go with someone else and may call the OP (at that point he could tell him why he charges the price he does and what ALL goes into it). but yeah, i wouldn't wait around for him to call either, but if he does.. a deposit would be necessary so the OP doesn't get stood up again...

Your price was very cheap. A 2 step is at least 6 hours of work. That would have you around $30/HR which is pretty cheap.. Get a 50 dollar deposit next time, its non refundable unless they give you proper notice, or have a serious emergency.

Wow, that's bad. The guy agreed to a day, price and time and refused to go ahead? I have had people bail on me the morning of the detail before, but they normally reschedule later. I had one lady text message (!!!!!!) me at 9am the day of the detail that was scheduled for 10am the same day. I got really mad.....she couldn't even call! I then had a wasted day.

If this idiot thought you were too expensive (I get these type of dreamers ALL the time!!), then he should have at least called you back and canceled so you could schedule in someone else!! I wouldn't have anything to do with him, even if he does call. Tell him to go get the homeless bum to do his car for $25.

:getdown LOL ohh man that last line was toooooo funny.

if you charged the retail rate, about $60/hr, then he would probably point out every little thing wrong that you "missed". problem is, you didn't miss it, its just not included...like polishing the wheels, touch up work, removal of lights to clean inside the cracks, etc.

That's why i wish i always had unlimited time with a car and I could make every car a concourse car (and get paid for it too)

The last line is 100% true. Some of my clients have reported being approached by bums at traffic lights (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and at self service car washes by bums offering to 'detail' their car for $25 using an instant spray detailer (with water added to make more) and a windex bottle in hand.
