Polishes???

I'm really having a hard time trying to decide which brand of polish I should go with. Everyone speaks highly of Menzerna, Poorboys, 3M etc. Top of the Line for example carries Menzerna but they also carry a lower priced polish. What's the difference and are these lower priced polishes just as effective or are we just paying for the name?

I would imagine that Professional Detailers are keeping an eye on their costs so do they buy the lower priced polishes?

Just want to get the best value for the $$$.

Don't forget about Meguiar's :D

In reality, everybody has their favorite products and you won't know what you like best until you try a few of them. Don't be too concerned with the brand.

Like it's been said before: find something you like and stick with it.

As has been said, there are a zillion polishes out there and everyone has their faves. The only way you're gonna know what you like is to try some of them.

Pros look for performance and bulk qty's. Price per ounce and availability are important to people who detail for a living but for enthusiasts, price really doesn't matter. Plus, most non-pro's don't want to buy their polishes by the gallon, which is exactly what most pros want.

If an inexpensive polish works for you, great!

IMO, if you're new to polishing finishes, I'd stay with some polishes that are a bit more user friendly. Poorboy's World makes some very friendly polishes.

Meguiars is also a line that many of us use for polishing.

It also depends on how you are going to use them, ie: hand, Random Orbital, Rotary etc. Also what is the condition of the finish, swirls, scratches, oxidation, minor swirls etc.

1Z makes some fine polishes as well. Have not used them, but hear they are top notch.

As for Menzerna, they are one of the finest in the world. However, the line currently used is really for OEM/Tier 1 work. Not very user friendly, but results are spectacular. If you're new, work with more friendly polishes first and if you want to use Menzerna and have a bit more of an idea how polishes and pads work, then go for it.

More information on how you plan to use them will get you better responces from the guys/gals here.

Deanski

I'll just add that no matter what polish you go with make sure that it can be applied by hand. You didn't mention if you had a PC or not, so I'm just assuming that you are polishing by hand.

shelshel- With all the different product lines, it's no wonder you're sorta  about what to go with.

I too think that something very user-friendly is the way to go, especially when you're starting out. Nothing worse than working hard for results that frustrate you. There can be some pretty incredible differences when it comes to ease-of-use, especially when you're not all that experienced.

I'll give you sorta the flip-side of Deanski's post :D I haven't tried *Poorboy's*, but I KNOW that 1Z polishes are *very* user-friendly. I've tried most of the other ones that've been mentioned so far, and I'd absolutely go with one of those two brands. Nobody has ever had a problem with them (as far as I can recall) either by hand or by PC. Some of the "regular/standard recommendations" are sorta tricky, or at least labor-intensive, especially by hand. But you won't go wrong with PB's or 1Z.

Thanks for all the advice everyone has given me. Like everyone has been saying there are so many different brands of polish that I just wanted to know if there was really that much of difference between the $15 brand as compared to the $5 one. Just wanted to know if the old saying..."you get what you pay for" applies.

im using the 1z polishes right now, and i love them... they really work great... first time i used them i came out with good results, with ease... but i cant wait to try menzerna... ir i had to choose i would go with either 1z or menzerna.. win win situation...and yes, the more u pay for the more u get... after trying out meguiars and comparing it to 1z/menzerna, there no competition...

shelshel,

If you are seeking to use a professional product with a great price, no fancy packaging (which the user does pay for) then you can't go wrong with some of the Hi-Temp products.

2 Hi-Temp products come to mind. One is "Light Cut", which is a mild cleaner/polish designed to level 1500 grit or higher sandingmarks by rotary. Works well by hand or orbital also.

Another nice all in one product is Paint Perfection Glaze by Hi-Temp. It is formulated with Light Cut and has a polymer in it for protection.

Menzerna FP is my #1 choice for final polishing BUT it can be finicky at times. I don't recommend it much for the weekend warrior.

Your polish choice will depend greatly on your paints condition and what you are seeking to achieve, results wise.

I really like Meguiars Professional lines (Mirror Glaze and especially Body Shop Professional). Enthusiast/car show level results at a reasonable price. I always make sure I have some DACP, Swirl Free Polish and Speed Glaze on hand.

Currently, I find the Meguiar's line offers me a lot of flexibility with DACP, Swirl Remover, Speed Glaze, etc. When you choose a good company I don't think you will ever go wrong with a specific polish line. It's really what seems to mesh well with you as far as ease of use, price, availability, etc.

In my seven years, I have tryed quite a few diff brands. These are what I use

Unlike alot of detailers, I like to use the most diverse range possible. Currently have 26 different brands of products although I only use between three and seven products per brand as many brands have products that are not up to my standard.

Doesn't matter what size for me, 20 Litre, 5, 3.78, 1 or even 473ml. Got them all

The Hi-Temp products were the ones that I was looking at that were priced lower. I think I try the Poorboys brand first and then try some of the Hi-Temp.

I'm stepping into hand applied polishes for the first time. I bought Poorboys SSR 1 and 2.5, and I gotta say, they worked exactly as advertised. The 2.5 was maybe a bit too strong, as it left some hazing, but the 1 cleared it all up. Great stuff. So far I've only done my hood, but it's damn near swirl free, which is awesome for black. I topped it with Klasse, SG, and S100.

what about Zainos line of polishes? i remember a while ago, a lot of people on this board always used them. i was gonna buy the whole zaino kit until i read this post where 1Z seems to be the favorite.

Zaino doesn't offer a polish in the its true meaning. What they call a polish is really a sealant and the reason they call it as such is because they don't want to use the word "wax".
