polishes for a noob

I am going to venture into the correction game. I read lots of articles on hear and am looking for some advice in regards to polishes. I was thinking about ssr1 or 205 but looking for some recommendations on specific products and ways to pick my product.. Pros and conts.. That sort of thing. I'm planning to be using a flex with orange white blue and black pads. Advice appreciated.

The Megs 105/205 combo is very easy to work with and you will get great results. Its cheap too. Only con is keep it away from trim!

tape off trim is what u mean I presume? or keep it away all together?

Taping will work. The M105/M205 can stain if they dry on it, and while I do use abrasive (paint) polishes on smooth plastic trim, the M205 did *NOT* work well for this on the Yukon (looked OK until the oils dried out, then !yikes!).

But yeah, M105/M205 work well via Flex IMO. Just gotta watch the short work time and the possiblility of drying out the M105 too much.

Some people (myself included) like short work times. Others, like Mike Phillips, sometimes like longer work times. Mike also pointed out that some polishes are easier to buff off, and that's one reason why he likes the Wolfgang stuff that Menzerna makes. And some people like *really* long work times...but I can feel myself getting older before OCP is broken down :chuckle:

Should you hand buff off the polish or machine? actually that makes me ask the same question about LSPs too. . ?

I never had good luck buffing the polish residue by machine, and with most polishes (the exceptions generally being certain 1Z products) you oughta get the residue off before it dries, which pretty much means using two polishers. Even then, the polish residue loads up on MF bonnets awfully fast...how many of 'em do you want to buy ;)

LSPs come off OK by machine, but IME you usually still need to do a by-hand final follow-up anyhow. And you'll need more bonnets than you think, even if you LSP as thinly as I do. I just did 845 that way (on/off by machine) the other day and it worked fine.

OK, I little OT here but what would I use to clean polish (M105/M205) off black trim? I did my first try last week and didn't tape off (didn't have time and really wanted to get to polish some paint :)) so now, a week later and a rain there are some nasty white stains on the trim especially around the windows, the only other product I used was Meguiar's Cleaner wax, but I think it is the polish. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Meguiar's Cleaner Wax is terrible in this regard, tough to get off trim. But probably no worse than dried M105.

There were a few posts about this recently...APCs, Dried Wax Remover products, scrubbing with a Magic Eraser, KAIO, undiluted PrepWash, paint cleaner products, I've even scrubbed with a brass brush (better be *very* careful if you try that).

Not to be a scold, but IMO if you don't have time to tape/etc. (AKA "doing it right"), then you don't really have time to polish ;)

I like Menzerna PO 85RD .... That is what I started with. Not to agressive so you won't burn a hole in your paint. Good Luck. Let us know how it turns out.

You are right of course, and I knew it, so I will be redoing everything and start from scratch again -

wash, clay, TAPE:cool:, polish, seal. The problem is that I can't wait sometimes and that messes things up...

Would IPA clean off Meg's CW from the paint? Or just a Dawn wash or similar?

Ithink I am wayyy OT sorry....

I'd be surprised if the IPA did the job, but it probably wouldn't hurt to try. The Dawn would probably be more effective, but even then I think you'll have to add some mechanical agitation, as in really *scrubbing* the areas in question. Unfortunately this can be a huge PIA, so/but don't get discouraged, just keep upping the aggressiveness of your approach(es) until you find what works. Be careful not to mess up the surrounding paint ;)
