Polish products and black trim

Do you have to be careful not to get products such as #3M FI-II and SMR on black trim and weatherstripping. Will it stain like cheaper waxes or can you just kind of get crazy with the stuff and then clean up later?

Thanks!

I would treat it like staining waxes. When I used 3M SMR on my car it stained the trim a bit, paritially because the trim is degraded some with age.

Either mask it off with tape or something else I've heard to do is treat it with protectant beforehand. I think this would be easier than trying to clean it off after.

Generally, before and after put a protectant like 303 Protectant on the trim. This will help prevent and cover/remove? wax on the trim. I put it on a mf and work it in hard.

They're both on the money. Treating the black trim beforehand with a protectant (I like Meguiar's Gold Class Trim Detail especially here, because it's such a thick formula) works real well. I've been doing this way for years, first with Meguiar's No. 40 or 303, and lately with Trim Detailer, and it works well.
