If I buff some polishing and rubbing compound around on my driver side door to get some residue off will it harm my paint at all?

Possibly.
It depends a lot on the product.
Some compounds are like liquid sandpaper.
Do some reading and research before you start this project.
Residue, even paint residue, can probably be removed with either a paint cleaner or a very mild polish.

Well I debadge my truck and it looks like a coat of paint was put on while the badges were on.. It s just like a line of pushed up paint and someone told me I could polish or buff it out and I wanted to give it a try. Any suggestions?

Just one. Don't do it.
If you have a line of paint where the badges were, you aren't going to make that layer of paint match what was under the badges.
You might be able to blend the edge of the paint so it is less noticeable, but I'm not sure that will look all that great.
You might want to have a body shop take a look at it and tell you what the odds are that you can make it look good.

That sounds really dicey to me. I agree with Charles take it to a body shop to get some suggestions. I sounds like it could wind up being a mess with the paint and clear flaking off in the emblem area.

Went to a body shop yesterday. The truck had been painted back in 2002 and instead of the body shop taking the badges and emblems off, they taped them up, thus leaving the underside of them not painted. Now I get to get it all painted again :(.

I suspected with what you posted...now I'm wondering if some wet sanding might help to smooth out the area...then buffing to clean that up

Any chances you can post some pics of this?

I would have to imagine decals and emblems are a lot less expensive than a paint job - at least any paint job that you'd want on a vehicle.
