Polish and Wax Applicators?

Which kinds of applicators have more "bite" for applying polish and cleaners? I'm guessing it would either be terry or MF applicators. And for waxes that don't require that "bite" foam will do? Am I right or wrong?

I'm also guessing that "terry" cotton would have more bite than the "terry" microfiber that we know. Seems like MF sometimes has a hard time scratching surfaces, but I bet cotton fibers are a little bit bigger and would scratch, or polish when lubricated with a polish.
