Police finger print powder

A friend of mine's car was recently stolen and used in a bank robbery. The car was appropriately taken into custody as evidence by the local police.

When the car is returned, I don't really know what kind of condition it will be in after having been looked at for evidence.

My first thought was how to get finger print powder/dust off all the surfaces...especially since that stuff seems designed to stick.

Anyone have experience with a car after such evidence collection?

Thanks for any advice you have to share.

Hey lsanford,

I have some experience with police fingerprint powder, but from the application end. It really isn't designed to stick. It works like dust, in that it clings to a surface by way of static electricity. It will/should just wipe right off. There might be some concern with residue from the lifting tape, but I wouldn’t count on it.

Hope this helps.

I can tell you that you definitely need to get as much as possible off with a dry rag. Then move to a slightly damp cloth. If you try to clean it with a wet rag it will just make a huge mess.

a damp MF towel does the trick. Just did this the other day. as others have noted be sure to use only a damp towel as it can get messy when really wet.
