Polarized sunglasses...wow!

I've owned two pairs of Oakleys and some other good glasses, and I'm not sure why but I assumed they were all polarized.

Well, I just got a new set of Ray-bans with polarized lenses and I'm just blown away! They take away glare without needing to cut the light nearly as much. It is quite shocking, reminds me of those old "blu-blocker" sunglass commercials! :)

There are some issues with them. Some glass surfaces are treated in various ways and you see weird effects like checkerboard patterns, purple windshields on people behind you, etc. And of course if I pivot my head my instrument panel goes black.

On the plus side, they make paint look deeper and render great color under mid-day sun. My Speed Yellow Boxster, which is a bit on the pale or washed-out side under string light, looks better than ever.

In short, highly recommended! :)

How much did they run you? I have been considering buying a good pair of polarized sunglasses, but I can't seem to decide if I want to spend a lot or a little.

These ones cost me $90 off eBay. They should last a long time though, the lenses are real glass. I'm ashamed to say I've paid much more for Oakleys and they look like crap after a year. Chipped paint on the frames, lenses than scratch easier than anything this side of a black iPod Nano.

I have Rx sunglasses, and I'll always pay the premium for the polarized lenses. You get used to having to look at LCD screens dead on and the weird car window checkerboarding when you realize how much glare they cut.

Also, there are some rediculously expensive polarized sunglasses out there that aren't worth it, but there are also some that are very bad and less expensive.

Ray-ban is a good brand. Stylish frames and their lenses are pretty good too. I personally have all my Rx sun lenses mounted into Ray-ban frames because I like their simple but elegant/sporty look.

I have prescription polarized sunglasses too and very much noticed a huge difference. You do see the patterns in LCD displays, rear windows in vehicles and even glass in some office buildings are patterned. Just think of them as "special" glasses. One thing I have found is driving all day with them on sure does reduce eye fatigue and they are great in hazy, rainy and up here bright snowy weather. Glad to hear you're enjoying your Ray Bans. :cooleek:

My Gants have a Polarized clip and, like everyone else, I get the issues with LCDs. But it definitely cuts down the glare.

Still waiting for Polarized Transitions Lenses.

Cool to see you guys are on the polarized lens kick. I have been using them for years since I fished a lot. my eye doctor told me that the added bonus is that these lens are also great for you eyes. he said they do a very good job on the harmful sun's rays.

I recently bought my first pair of poloarized glasses, Bolle Meanstreaks with the Cactus tinted lenses. They are absolutely excellent for driving in the glaring sun. I do get a little of the checkerboard and weird rainbow effect issues, but the view straight ahead through the windshield is great. They really cut down the glare and make the road and everything on it more visable. Also, my Lapis Blue paint looks even better that it does :D I will only own polarized lenses from now on.

Also for detailing purposes you can see any polish or LSP that you may hve missed. guess the lenses serve many purposes :werd:

Buy a pair at Wally World for $10 to make sure you can live with the weird things they do (listed above). I didn't like having to take them off to do some things (fill up with gas so I could see the LCD) so I decided not to spend big bucks on a higher end pair.

I have a set of Rx Harley Davidson sunglasses that are polarized. I almost wrecked on the drive home when I saw the first windshield behind me with spots all over it. I got used to them and have had them for a year now. I have never had a headache while wearing them, so I'll take the solar tint window issues because I used to get headaches frequently on bright days.

Talking about polarized lenses. My doctor gave me a couple of pairs for free, very stylish. I checked out some Rudy Projects (Kerosene), and other brand for about $150, no what, no difference at all except the price. Polar Eyes makes some nice one's for about $50.

Until recently I lived near the Bass Pro shop in Springfield, MO and I always kept a couple of their cheap polarized sunglasses (lighter and darker) in the car. They have 'em in the store or the catalog outlet for less than $10 on a regular basis. I haven't checked their online store. Now that I've moved I'll have to find a new source. I'll probably check out tackle stores since fishermen like polarized glasses to cut glare from the water.

I have had my pair of polarized Vaurnet's for 16 years now. They are a tad out of style, but still work with only minor scratches on them.

Wife hates them because of the style, yet she does not want me to spend over $20 to replace them..haha, wifes...

Yeah, I have to tilt my head at a certain angle to see some stuff on the instrument clusters of the Audis. If I look straight on it's all blacked out, but at a slight angle I can read it.

And there's a weird "smear" on the replaced driver's door window of the S8 that really jumps out at me with the polarized lenses. They replaced it twice but all the replacement glass from Audi has the same flaw

OutlawTitan- Yeah, I like my Maui Jims too. Wish they were a bit darker though.

I have a pair of Oakleys that are polarized and love them! Out of all the sunglasses I have tried, I love the lenses of the Oakleys the best. I think polarized lenses also let's you see defects in cars paint that you can't see without em.

As far as customer service goes, I have nothing but praise for Oakley. They may charge you alot upfront, but I have had nothing but stellar service from them. On a pair of Romeos I have (Non-polarized), I noticed small cracks in the lenses near the nose piece. When I called them they just asked to send it back despite being out of warranty. For anyone else, if your Oakley lenses are scratched up, just call and get a return number and they can replace the lenses at a very nominal rate. For 20-30 beans you basically get new glasses! Well worth it! I love their lenses. I ahte wearing glasses period because I don't like anything distorting my vision, but Oakleys are a fave in my book!

As someone else mentioned, the polarized lenses are great on the boat! You can so much deeper into the water!

Another thing is that I have a polarized filter for my 35mm camera. I believe that the instructions for it stated that I could not wear polarized lenses when taking pics with it. Therefore, I have to wear my normal glasses for photography.

I picked up a fair pair at WallyWorld for $10 but, like I said, I didn't like some of the effects they had on things I looked at and I gave them to my son.
