Observations and comments:
Openness - The ultimate test of openness is allowing the discussion of certain brands like those Kemical Guys. It does not look like DC is especially heavily moderated (posts get axed except in vendor specific areas).
Newbie friendliness - you see people joining but not many seem to post much after that. Of course this is common in many forums. I do not think contests generally attract long term posters. I have seen several get chased off because they did not behave like the norm by annoying members in various ways or getting mad and leaving. Some do arrive with some brand preferences that comes across as spamming. I would avoid self-appointed posse's that try to dictate rules beyond the forum moderator.
Popular threads - It looks like non-detailing threads (guns, politics, toyota) seem to have the most postings. Why?
Competition - I was not a member in the good old days at DC but there seems to be a lot more competition these days. Forum regulars at various new forums seem to be people who left one place due to rules on openness, moderating, etc. It is annoying when these forums spend a lot of time bashing other forums or personalities related to the forums.
Chat room - I think it is a good idea. I noticed another site had special guests (product makers) to answer questions.
Good luck.
That's awesome. We may have to look into more DC Gear since the hats were so popular. Maybe do some T shirts too.
