Platinum Acrylic Polymer Sealant

I tried something new on the Boxster for the first time. I stripped off the Souveran with Dawn and made sure the finish was squeeky clean.

Following the directions on the Platinum label, I did something I don't normally do, I applied the sealant with my Porter Cable Orbital Buffer. Platinum can be applied by hand but the directions state that best results are obtained by applying with an applicator and rubbing thoroughly into the surface. The orbital worked perfectly and the wax dried to a haze within a minute. It needs about a 20 minute drying time.

I found Platinum very easy to buff off with a microfiber towel and left very little residue. I used three towels for the Boxster. Please note that it left no white residue on trim!

One tip with the application: thinner is better! In spots where I did get the application of wax too thick it was a bit more difficult requiring a couple extra swipes. No big deal but something to keep in mind.

Another tip has to do with getting carried away with the PC. I literally started waxing with the PC and went around the whole car before I went back and started buffing off the dried wax. This was really a little too long. Waiting longer makes the buffing process a bit more strenuous.

In comparison, I would say it buffs off much, much easier than Klasse, better than Meguiars 20, just slightly easier than Blitz, or Meguiars 26. On the flip side, it's a little tougher to remove than Zaino or Pinnacle.

As far as slickness, I would rate it as better than Meguiars 20, as good as Blitz, but not quite as slick as Souveran, Paste Glaz or Zaino.

I like the shine a lot. Very reflective, very wet. It beads well when wet, though I'm told it time it will begin to sheet. It is layerable and I will give that a try in the future. Platinum needs 24 hours cure time between coats.

Durability will be a key factor. I will let you know. I know touch ups can be easily and quickly done so even if they had to be done 4 or 5 times a year that would be acceptable.

Platinum comes with it's own Gloss Enhancer Quick Detailer. The QD does add some slickness and gloss but does seem low on lubricity so I would use it only on a clean car. It's a little difficult to apply in that it doesn't spread far. It's almost as if your spreading a wax on the car. I like it, it's just different than any other QD I've used. A little thicker in consistency, too. The label claims extra effect for dark colored cars! (interesting)

Platinum is similar in chemical make-up to Klasse in that it is an acrylic base, but Platinum is water based and that is one reason it is not as difficult to buff off. It's called a Acrylic co-polymer. If you pour out some Platinum and look at it you'll find it is very similar in look, feel and smell to Klasse. (White with a slight purplish tint) Another co-polymer used provides UV protection, defense against against acid rain and a high melting point. The third polymer is a silicone polymer that increases shine, gloss, slickness and ease of use.

So basically, I like it! It went on easy, it buffed off easy. It looks great. Now I will see how it holds up. I have a bunch of pictures I took the day I buffed the Boxster at:

I just ordered some more, I too liked it.

I detailed my auto about a week ago with Platinum Acrylic Polymer Sealant. I too used a PC.

Your comments are excellent. I was holding my review for a few weeks, after a few washings. But your review covers it.

I put a second layer on a few days ago. I washed her today and it still looks good.

Well it sounds decent enough, thanks for the review, very thorough and informative! So, I can't waint until my free samples show up. Until then, please keep us posted on durabiity, which is most important to me and my daily drivers. I'm always up for trying new things as long as it's quality product from a reputable company. Anyway, nice pics of your Boxster! That's definitely one of the more reflective and deep silver cars I've ever seen.

Brad....Great info, been holding out for a review.

Jeff, how did the car feel after you washed it? Was there any slickness to it or was it squeaky clean until your next coat?

Tx,

LC

This is an out-side car (Van). Use Gold Class and Mf wash mitt. Still nice and slick. I also Qd it periodically with Sonus or FI.

Edit:

I also notice that QD'ing that the MF on the Souvran car glides

and the MF on the Polymer cars stick at times ...just my 2c

Great review Brad. I've been using Souveran and Klasse but was thinking about trying Platinum or Blackfire. I will wait until you give some feedback on durability before making a final decision.

I added a quick second coat by hand to the horizontal surfaces on Sunday.

The car was subjected to it's first rainstorm on Monday. It beaded well. As far as durability, it is supposed to be a good 3 month product. Will let you know how it hold up along the way.:xyxthumbs

Good to hear about the beading. Would be interested in your first wash. Actually, I am guessing you washed before that second coat or did it rain after that?

I ordered mine today, what the heck! I tried my BF one more time and despite using EO wash vice the BF wash it was still squeaky clean afterward no slickness until QD'd.

Brad I do not see a mention of the wash or paint cleaner did you get these as well?

I applied the second coat after the first coat but before any washings occured.

Actually, yes, I have the Platinum Shampoo as well, but have not tried it yet.

Since it is now sitting in the garage all soaked and dirty from the rain and the upcoming week is looking like a similar forcast, a shampoo might be in order later this week.:p

I have tried the platinum wax it's pretty good leaves a gret shine on light color cars takes about 6 hours to cure though but in all its a good selant

the reason i am posting now is...,

i want to know about the durability(as compared to zaino, klasse, etc). i use klasse and zaino and have compared the two. i like klasse better than zaino as it is VERY easy to apply, you only need two products(AIO & SG as compared to a list of zaino).

As I said before, check out some of the reviews that have been done in the last couple months. This review is from when it was still pretty new. There have been two formula changes since this thread started.

Platinum is a good 4 or 5 month sealant. It won't last as long as Klasse on most cars but it may hold up against Zaino. It is more like Blackfire than either of these two sealants though. It protects like a sealant but has the wet look and glow of a carnauba. Personally I really like Platinum. Check out the newer posts for other opinions though. The new formula is supposed to be really good.

The first two versions of Platinum provide an incredibly nice shine, but do not have anywhere near the durability level of Zaino or Klasse. Can't say anything about the third revision though as I haven't tried it or heard anything about it.

Wayne,

If durability is your concern, then I'd stick with either Klasse or Zaino. Zaino is better than Klasse at maintaining a nice slick surface that beads forever, but as a hydro-carbon solvent based polymer, Klasse might provide slightly better overall protection than Z (water-based polymer) from acid rain and other corrosives. Can't go wrong with either choice.

thank you for your input. i didn't realize there were so many products i have not tried. everyday it seems as though i see something "new"(at least new to me). i currently use klasse on my work car and it is holding up great. on my wifes car i am using zaino(i kinda like the klasse better, IMO). on my "nice car" i have collinite on it right now, but next detail session i am debating between zaino and klasse. the paint is like a mirror, no scratches, swirls, etc, so i was afraid the klasse AIO, since it is also a cleaner might cause some swirls/ spiderwebbing, so i am kinda leaning to zaino, except it seems to attract more dust.

....why doesn't someone make a PERFECT product, LOL!

Klasse AIO will NEVER cause swirls. only dirty pads, improper washing/drying/buffing techniques, etc. cause swirls. important distinction.
