I tried something new on the Boxster for the first time. I stripped off the Souveran with Dawn and made sure the finish was squeeky clean.
Following the directions on the Platinum label, I did something I don't normally do, I applied the sealant with my Porter Cable Orbital Buffer. Platinum can be applied by hand but the directions state that best results are obtained by applying with an applicator and rubbing thoroughly into the surface. The orbital worked perfectly and the wax dried to a haze within a minute. It needs about a 20 minute drying time.
I found Platinum very easy to buff off with a microfiber towel and left very little residue. I used three towels for the Boxster. Please note that it left no white residue on trim!
One tip with the application: thinner is better! In spots where I did get the application of wax too thick it was a bit more difficult requiring a couple extra swipes. No big deal but something to keep in mind.
Another tip has to do with getting carried away with the PC. I literally started waxing with the PC and went around the whole car before I went back and started buffing off the dried wax. This was really a little too long. Waiting longer makes the buffing process a bit more strenuous.
In comparison, I would say it buffs off much, much easier than Klasse, better than Meguiars 20, just slightly easier than Blitz, or Meguiars 26. On the flip side, it's a little tougher to remove than Zaino or Pinnacle.
As far as slickness, I would rate it as better than Meguiars 20, as good as Blitz, but not quite as slick as Souveran, Paste Glaz or Zaino.
I like the shine a lot. Very reflective, very wet. It beads well when wet, though I'm told it time it will begin to sheet. It is layerable and I will give that a try in the future. Platinum needs 24 hours cure time between coats.
Durability will be a key factor. I will let you know. I know touch ups can be easily and quickly done so even if they had to be done 4 or 5 times a year that would be acceptable.
Platinum comes with it's own Gloss Enhancer Quick Detailer. The QD does add some slickness and gloss but does seem low on lubricity so I would use it only on a clean car. It's a little difficult to apply in that it doesn't spread far. It's almost as if your spreading a wax on the car. I like it, it's just different than any other QD I've used. A little thicker in consistency, too. The label claims extra effect for dark colored cars! (interesting)
Platinum is similar in chemical make-up to Klasse in that it is an acrylic base, but Platinum is water based and that is one reason it is not as difficult to buff off. It's called a Acrylic co-polymer. If you pour out some Platinum and look at it you'll find it is very similar in look, feel and smell to Klasse. (White with a slight purplish tint) Another co-polymer used provides UV protection, defense against against acid rain and a high melting point. The third polymer is a silicone polymer that increases shine, gloss, slickness and ease of use.
So basically, I like it! It went on easy, it buffed off easy. It looks great. Now I will see how it holds up. I have a bunch of pictures I took the day I buffed the Boxster at:
