Plastic Still on New Car - Please HELP!!

norahcrv

I wish . . .
My son bought a new car this week & asked them to leave all the "shipping plastic" on the paint so that "he" could detail it himself (with my "help").

Does anybody have any experience or suggestions for the removal of the plastic? Should it just "peel off"?? Then we can clay, polish, etc??

Thanks for your help!

I picked up my new one the same way.

-Wash the car (with plastic on)
-Gently peel away the film
-Soak areas with mild bug and tar remover (Auto Int New Car Prep)
-Gently wipe with an MF
-Rewash
-Inspect
-Seal

Norah I watched them one afternoon doing this at a dealership while waiting for my car....all they did was peel it off seemed to come off very easy that I could see.....any residue that might be left over you can remove with Stoners Xient according to the can...I've used Xient for many things along these lines remove glue residue..Good luck

:howdy Norah..

I did basically what Sean did...

washing with the plastic on is important...you do not want to be removing plastic with the grit on the car..just brushing up against that grit will mar it..wash it first...my plastic was sorta a cling on type plastic...there was no adhesive residue when I removed it..not to say yours is the same...

after removal of the plastic follow Sean's method and you will be all set...

Sharp looking vehicle....color does it justice..like that Blue...

Enjoy the first detail...in the 110 temps you are having...LOL....maybe you want to put Richards Simons Cd in the player..SWEATING to THE OLDIES...lol....Have fun and enjoy...:howdy

Sorry I can't give you any advice on removing the plastic, but do tell Bryce Congrats on the new car,and I'm sure that mom will be glad to give him a hand maintaining it.

Oh yeah don't forget the pics

Is it plastic or is it a sprayed on coating? Some of the import cars use a spray on coating that either washes off or you have to use a special cleaner to clean it off.

Progress Report . . . the plastic has now been peeled off the hood, planning to tackle the roof tomorrow, time permitting. It peels off just like skin after a bad sunburn - mostly large strips, but it left a couple of small bits that I'll go after with the clay this weekend.

Thanks for all your helpful suggestions & good wishes:)

And yes, BlackSunshine is right, that is the new 2007 Honda Fit! :bigups

Norah...

I would be careful using clay to remove the plastic..you may get the small pieces in the clay and it may mar the finish...Try a little bug and tar remover first to try to remove it...rub litely..If you do decide to try clay..use very little downward pressure on the clay...see if you can grab an edge of it and lift it with the clay....but the tar remover should work good for this ...

I do not agree with clay. I work for a honda dealership and what you cant get off with peeling should be taken care of with an adhesive remover or baby oil believe it or not, it lubes the surface and its falls right off. Otherwise a stream of water can typically take it off. Make sure you get the little piece by the door handle that I am sure you noticed, but I did not the first time. Congrats on the new FIT, I hope the salesman showed you how to configure it in all the ways possible. It is truly a versatile vehicle once you take a look at all the cargo space you can have.

That's a 2007 Honda Fit (aka Jazz) in Vivid Blue Pearl. It's been out overseas for about five years now (2001-present) so I'm not sure how long they'll produce this generation to sell in the US.

I did the same thing last month with the new Mustang simply peel it off. It comes off very very easy.

Yep, I agree. I pulled the plastic off my mom's new 2006 GMC Envoy Denali this weekend, and used 3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner for any spots that didn't just peel off. :D

Yep, any plastic film "leftover" adhesive will be removed by the 3M. Works like magic!

Nice car! And it's a good idea to wash first then remove. After all removed, check for rail dust or other debris and clay it if it needs it. A fine glaze is all that may be needed at this point. No need to start polishing unless it has defects!

Enjoy the new car!
