Leather seating usually comes in 2 varieties. The more expensive type would be a properly tanned leather with the color impregnated into the leather and the more prevalent sprayed on variety(very commonplace in less expensive vehicles). Usually any leather conditioner will work to maintain either variety, however always test on an area out of sight to see if a leather cleaner will strip the color.
 
If the car has untreated leather, simply dab a drop of water on it, and see if it turns dark. If it is treated like most newer cars, it won't change the color at all.

What i think was suppose to be added, you need to clean the seat before you try the water test. Obviosuly dirt, oils and protectants will all effect the beading!

I think you misunderstand the process slightly. All leather is pretty much tanned the same way. You are talking about the finishing process. Almost all leather is finished in automobiles.
 
For the first time ever, I used Collinite No.855 Sapphire leather and vinyl wax on the new family truck, an '09 F 150 Platinum. While the leather in this truck looks good new, I figured it was in for one heck of ride with my wife being the primary driver.

The product goes on very easily, makes the leather feel great and has reduced the cleaning chores down to a wipe down with a damp microfiber towel. And it appears to be holding up nicely.

While there are those who would shudder at the idea of using a wax like product on leather, in the case of a concours car, I'd say you're right; but in my case where the vehicle will be subjected to an "anything goes" type of environment, this stuff is good.

Let me close by saying I feel like I don't even have the right to post anything on this forum - there are so many great professional detailers here and I am just your basic nobody that takes care of 4 cars in our family and tries to keep them looking presentable. I have learned a LOT here and want thank all of you for letting the those of us who don't have the time to really do it 100% in on some of your secrets. You fellas are truly wizards! Just thought I do a post on the Collinite 855 because you rarely see it mentioned anywhere.
