Pics of your shops?

Mike - Awesome looking shop ! I like how you did your signage, very well placed and presented, but not overly done and tacky. And props on your Reddy heater, those are the best heaters in existance (although the fumes they create kind of suck, haha).

Thank you! I can't take any of the credit though. My wife is a graphic designer for our community hospital so she does all of my design/marketing/advertising. And the heater actually belonged to my landlord. I'm really not sure why he had it in there since the building has a gas heater installed. But thanks! :xyxthumbs

Unfortunately I will be renting out my house after my wedding this June and will likely not have use of the shop anymore.

Where are you going to do all your detailing?

Very nice and clean shop Mike - Love those big drains at the bay entrance. How many cars can you work on and store over night?

Thanks David! The drains were the hardest thing to find when looking for a shop. I really lucked out having not 1 bay, but all bays with drains. The bay on the far left is "walled off" from the other two bays so I use it as my wash bay (works well since the wall keeps the water in that area only). The only downside about the wash bay is that it's not as deep as the other two bays, and with the walls, I can't open doors very wide to clean the jambs. My landlord has a Lincoln Mark LT (F150) crew cab and it's so big I have to wash it in my other two bay areas, which I don't really like to do because it gets water everywhere.

After I wash the vehicle, I move it into one of the "two-bay" area where I do all the detail work. If I only have one vehicle in there, I'll angle it in so I have more room to move around the sides of the vehicle with the doors open. It's really not possible to have two cars in there at the same time and have all the vehicle doors open (ie - two interior jobs at the same time). I basically use that third bay on the right side as an exterior only bay or a storage bay.

Hopefully all that makes sense.

EDIT: I just found a picture that gives a better visual. With large vehicles, it makes things real snug! Again, that cabinet on the right side wall is gone. And I've moved the shelf with my supplies to the back wall so it's out of the way as well.

Hendricks County Flyer, Avon, IN -

*Note - Both vehicles are pulled slightly out of the building just for picture purposes.

I feel really fortunate to have this place as a first shop. As I said before, it's about 1,100 sq. ft. so there were a few times even last year during the busy season where I could have used a lot more space. But for now, it's a good fit for me.

Thanks again!

You are getting a PhD and, then continue detailing? Go get a PhD level job.

Masters, kinda bored with academia right now. I'm going to apply but I miss detailing full time and even if I don't do it full time, I would like to be a partner.

Not really sure yet. :nixweiss

The housing market sucks and I can't sell my home right now so I'm just going to try and rent it. It has 2 larger 2 stall garages, one attached, and then the detached which is my shop. If I can find a renter that won't mind me working in the back then I may still be able to do some work. If not, I may just take some time off and enjoy a summer for once which would actually be nice after the wedding. ;)

Once she's done with school we will add onto her home or buy something with a large garage so that I have a nice place to detail again.

3500 sf. We can store 12 vehicles, but typically work on 4 or 5 at any given time. (fewer in winter, of course.)
