Pics of the Porsche Carrera im detailing tomorrow, some questions.

Hey everyone,



Customer dropped off his 1995 black Porsche Carrera for me to detail tomorrow. Im going to start sometime tomorrow morning and just took some pics of it in the garage. He didn't know if this was a single stage paint or not, but I assume it has a clearcoat. He also has some fender bra's on the car. Is it ok to clay, polish/wax over those or should I just avoid them completely?



Other than that the car is in pretty good shape for a 95. Has a few dings here and there, and lots of rock chips on the front bumper. The wheels are filthy so those should clean up pretty nicely. This is a complete exterior detail, I asked him if he wanted interior work done, but he said no pretty quickly.

Heres the clear bra im talking about. Ok to buff over it?

Not all 95's had clears. I did a white C4 today and also a 94-93 guards red one a few weeks back and both had no clear.



Tape off the clear bra material and only go over it when doing your final polishing step with a soft pad and a low abrasive product and careful when waxing as you do not want to get wax build up in the edge.

Everyone think the PC can handle this?



Also, I have never done a single stage paint before. Anything special I need to know before I compound?
 
For clear bra, don't polish it. If it has stains you need to get out, use bug/tar remover. Otherwise something like AIO will work good and follow up with your topper.

Would maybe ScratchX work good on that? I dont have any AIO unfortunetly. What else OTC might work good on the clearbra?

SS black is pretty soft. The PC should handle it just fine.



The trick to SS is keeping a clean pad, the pads will cake up with paint. Fill a 5 gallon bucket halfway with water and toss in a capful of Dawn. Every panel or so (or when the pad cakes up, you'll notice a loss in cut), toss the current pad in the bucket and put a clean pad on your PC. Let the pad soak for a little bit, then hose it out, wring it out and let it air dry. Repeat this process as necessary, until the car is done.



Also, if you have any Meguiars polishes around, *use them*. Much of Meg's pro line comes from the old single stage days, and their products really do work magic on SS finishes. I think its the "trade secret oils". Meg's glazes, in particular, blow away RMG on single stage finishes, but are a PITA to use on CC finishes.



Optimum products and RMG will work fine on SS finishes though. Last SS car I did got OCP/white/1500RPMS and it took out some pretty severe marring. Finished it with RMG/Souveran, results were quite good, possibility for improvement though.

Meg's PlastX should do the trick, as would either of the Mirror Glaze plastic polishes, if your local store stocks them.

I detailed that car last year and the clear was a little hard , not that soft like Porsche generaly have.

this car ^ was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw the 911 in this thread.

I don't know which was in worse shape to start. I sent that thread of your Turbo from hell to my friend

(who is coincidentally also Portuguese) for his black Passat that has been

through hell too. I've been wanting to try the Menzerna polish just from

seeing your work. Have you detailed this car since? I hope the owner maintained that look.

I hate seeing neglected 993, the last old school 911.
 
Things are going good. You wouldn't believe what the clay picked up out of this paint, unbelievable. I actually had to go buy another clay bar. I got tons of pics on the way for the Click & Brag section. Did a test panel and OHC/Yellow polishing pad seems to bust the swirls with some micro-marring left behind that OP should take care of.



So far, Wash/Clay took about three hours to do. There some stubborn tar on the wheels that just wont come off. Im definitely going to have to keep this car overnight and just work on it all day.



Unfortuntely I definitely undercharged him as I asked for $125. I anticipate about 16 hours of work.



Paint seems to be soft, and im taking off a lot of oxidized/dead paint.
 
For that stubbor tar you could try some WD-40, it has worked wonders for me when clay wouldnt even touch it....Good luck, cant wait to see the pictures!
 
Wow that's a good price! My cheesy local tunnel wash place quoted me about that much just for a simple two step "compound and wax" which they spent no more than half an hour on. I scoffed

when he said "oh only about 30 minutes". How can a good paint cleaning be done that quickly??



I'm sure if you politely inform him that the job will take longer than anticpated he will gladly pay you a bit more. for 16 hours sounds like a minimum of $250 to me but of course I have no idea what I'm talking about. I would email him pics of your progress (and pics of the jacked up clay) and tell him the prep is taking considerably longer since it has not been done in so long. The worst he can say is no.

Im 1/4 the way done polishing with the OHC. After that I am going to hit it with some OP to get rid of the hazing/micro-marring you can see in the AFTER pic.

Try AIO on a terry cloth towel, or soak it for an hour or two in Stoner's Tarminator or WD, then remove with a rag.
