Before & after photos showing the effects of 7hrs of PC7424 work on a 20yr old nightmare paint surface.



Here are some before and after photos showing a 1984 Mustang LX with original black paint.



The problems: terrible oxidation, etched-in water spots and acid rain spots, rust bubbles here and there, bubbling and peeling top coat of paint, scratches and swirls galore, several marks from other cars (and, no doubt, shopping carts).



The cure: Wash, clay bar, wash. PC7424 and 'white' pad with Meguiar's Medium Cut, DHCP, Fine Cut, Swirl Remover, Scratch-X. Finish with Meguiar's #7 Show Car Glaze, #6 Cleaner Wax (since the owner will be doing the 'easy' maintenance route).



The verdict: I'm impressed. Even with the PC buffer, removing 20yrs' worth of paint problems is a tough job. The various pads (wool, yellow, white, black) make the job much easier than it would otherwise be. And, simply varying the chemicals used with a given pad adjusts the scrubbing intensity. Caution with taking off too much surrounding paint, which can be done if not careful. An amazing tool, all around. Highly recommended.

Original paint, yes. Gloss black. I don't think it was clear coat, as a lot of black came off onto the pads during the cleaning. It's now the deep, rich, glossy black that Ford intended. Of course, 20yrs does a number on paint that's not well taken care of. There were a few 'thin' spots that couldn't take much buffing. But, mostly the oxidation and swirls disappeared as the wet-look black took hold. Nice change. Got a big, warm hug from the owner.

DACP -- Dual Action Cleaner Polish. Mis-typed dHcp. Sorry 'bout that. It's the Meguiar's product that folks here talk about quite a bit as a relatively aggressive polish for use with the random-orbital buffers. Used it on this Mustang. Between the Medium Cut and DACP, these were sufficient with the yellow pad or the wool pad to cut quite quickly through serious scratches/swirls.

Make sure the owner understands that they need to keep up on the paint now. It does not have a clearcoat since the paint is original (and you got black on your pads). 3 months max between waxing and I'd highly recommend they also use a glaze before waxing and cleaning the paint every 6-9 months to keep it in tip top shape.
