PFW pads and backing plate - problems

Ok, so a friend of mine has an older model Yukon that was completely abused by the prior owner. Oxidation, swirls, scratched, etc., etc. to infinity. I knew the job would be rough, and I wasn't planning on charging him, so I had him buy me the 3.5 inch PFW pads and the backing plate with the adapter for the PC as well as Pasta Intensiv per Accumulator's post(s). The combo worked well until the backing plate decided to come apart on me. Anyone have this problem before? Also, how do you keep the PFWs fluffed up? It seemed that even spurring about every application didn't really spruce up the pads. Any good technique is appreciated. I used a screwdriver to spur the pads with (some) success.

After the backing plate separated, I used 4" Orange LC pads. These did an admirable job with the PI. I followed up with #83 on white, cleaned with an alcohol/water mixture and was "pretty" impressed with the results. It should be made very clear that this particular job was not started with the intent of producing perfect results. This truck was so bad he was embarrassed to drive it and just wanted something he could drive around without feeling so bad. We had limited time (5 hours). If we had more time, we could have done a much better job.

I just wanted to find out if there was a known issue with the blacking plate for the PFW pads and to let people know that mine separated. Thankfully, no damage was done to the paint. I'll post pics of the job tonight. It was a dramatic difference, but certainly not perfect. He was absolutely happy with the way it turned out.

PICS TO COME TONIGHT.

Of the ~50 or so PFW I have I'd say 15 have lost their backing velcro. Oddly, *none* of my foam LC pads have lost theirs. I don't know why, but I in any event I don't think you're alone.

I have read of at least one other BP like that one coming apart. I think the main problem is that BP is designed more for a drill or a rotary than a PC. The DA motions of the PC put a lot of stress on BP's. Hopefully Autogeek or another vendor will start selling a BP for use with the 3.5" PFW pads that doesn't need an adapter.

Cassman- Glad to hear my recommended combo worked as well for you on that Yukon as it did for me on mine :D Sorry to hear about the backing plate issues though. Yeah...I bet the problem is in that adaptor  My little plate is like the Mirka one...wish I could remember where I got it.

I found that spurring my little PFW pads with a dull (slotted/standard) screwdriver worked better than using my (real) wool pad spur. Be careful if you try it though ;)

Hakko- Check out Cyclo Toolmakers . They sell (velcro-backed) 4" versions of the yellow and blue Edge wool pads. I haven't tried mine yet, but the yellow oughta work well with the right product.

Accumulator - Thanks for the tip. Further googling showed me that LC also make a 4" PFW pad. Detailed Image carry them.

Ah, that's good to know, thanks for posting it. With all the backing plate issues that oughta simplify things for everybody.

Picus,

Just so we are clear, it wasn't the PFW pad that lost the velcro, it was the backing plate that separated.

Accumulator, yeah, the Yukon turned out "relatively" well. Thanks for the tip. I really liked the 1Z Intensive Paste.
