Peeling clear???

Hello everyone



I was waxing my car past weekend and I notice something a bit concerning. I especially want reply from people who know quite a bit about paint. I attached a few pictures to that thread and I hope I did it the proper way.



As you can see if you look at the pictures, there is a few spot where the clear seems to be peeling from the paint. The car is a 2004 mazda 3 and is still under warranty, so I want to do something while they still pay for it. As the pictures show there is a really bad spot right over the edge of my skirt on the passenger side. The other major area is inside my back door on the driver side where there is 2 spot of peeling there. On the side of the back window there is a small spot, but I can guess it will get worst. This one does seem to have some powder stuck in between the clear and the paint, but I don't know what it is, might be some wax dust I don't know. The last one has been there for a while though, its right on top of the trunk, on the side of it. I saw that one a while back, but I didnt really botter about it and it never grew bigger.



Now what I'm looking for is if someone can tell me if those are really the clear peeling and what should be done about it. When I got the car I got a treatment done on it call "Tricor" and it included some kind of protecting coating for the paint, so I don't know if that could be the thing peeling or not. If its the clear, I want to know what is the best thing to do. I'm not too keen to the idea of having my car repainted, because company paint is always better than a repaint. I was planning to keep that car for a while so I need a fix that is good forever.



If someone care about the kind of maintenance I did on the paint, the car wasnt wax for the first year, because I didnt know much about it. Last year I started to wax it with Klasse twice a year and the car was clean every week to every second week (depending of my free time and weather). I polished it once, but the spot that are peeling are the one I didnt even touch.

2 things -



1 -That paint, if not repainted by you, is covered by Mazda. Check with a service advisor for the duration of coverage. Looks like bad clear adhesion, but needs further inspection by Mazda. Ask the service advisor to call the Mazda rep to come see it. They will fix it.



2- If you bought that "Tricor", take the receipt back to the guy that sold it to you with hte car and show them the damage. The first thing they will tell you is that you had the car repainted. I think you should go to service first before you piss yourself off for no reason. Look to see if the Tricor came with any warranty info.



My family owned a new car dealership for 30+ years, I have had to deal with this before.



DO NOT MENTION YOUR CAR CARE REGIMEN, THEY WILL LOOK FOR ANY EXCUSE NOT TO PAY TO GET IT FIXED!!!!!

Your clear coat is pealing. Unfortianetly, Mazda has had problems peeling and fading paint. Buffing and detailing can not fix this in any kind of way so don't try.



But luckely for you there are two options.

1. The car sounds like you purchased from a dealership with some kind of paint warranty protection package. Normally these types of warranties are 5 years. They normally require you to apply the renewer kit every 6 months, but they do not require you to have someone professionaly do it, you can tell them you did it yourself (if there is a renewer kit.) So therefore you are covered under the aftermarket warranty. If they have any quarrel, which I doubt they will you can take the car to a paint shop ask for their professional advice and they will tell you that the paint is pealing.



I have not come accross an aftermaket company that is hesitant on paying for these types of claims, most appreciate your business and have no problem fixing it. After all you probably paid several hundered dollars for the paint sealant/warranty. Normally on your warranty there is a 1-800 number you can call to make your claim.



2. You paint is still covered under the manufacturers warranty. The process might take longer but you are covered as far as the manufacturer goes. Most dealerships go ahead and repaint the surface and they take care of the warranty claim. They pay someone at the dealership that takes care of warranty claims, so there is nothing really you have to do.



So take my two suggestions and pick one, in either case you are entitled to having the paint fixed.



By the way your paint sealant is not what is pealing, so don't think it is. Paint sealant for the dealership is either a liquid/cream/paste. So it's not that. It is your clear.



You want to get it fixed pretty soon, because it will get worse. Unfortianetly, your other panels on the car can start doing it too. There is a problem with the base coat and clear coat adhession (manufacturers problem), so other panels that are not pealing right now can start doing it in the future. Just depends. Some cars from the factory have sinlge stage on the bumpers and clear on everything else. So your bumpers might fade and will not peal.

I didn't mention it first, but the paint sealant was done by the dealer and recommend by them. So in either case I need to deal with them. My main concern was if they will need to repaint from the metal or there is a way to avoid it. I just heard that aftermarket paint is never as good as the original, even though this one is not that great.



beside that if you said that the whole car can do the same thing, I probly should push it to have the whole car done. I just want to avoid myself those thing after the warranty is over.

The proper procedure for peeling paint is to strip the entire surface not necessarily just the spot it occured in, because where it happend in one spot it will happen in others.



As far as paint...wherever you vehicle is painted make sure they are using DuPont. You might have an option of where you want your vehicle painted. More than likely you will have a 85% chance of your option.



The only real problem you might face when having it repainted is the taping off of your vehicle, orange peel, paint runs, and trash in the paint. Make sure you take your vehicle (if you are picky) to someone that has been painting for over 10 years.

Its not that I'm that picky, but I like quality. I want that car to still be in shape when I'll sell it and its why I try to take care of it. I will go see my dealer this week and see what they will have to say.
