PC7424 pad size recommendation

I was in the mood to order some more pads as i wasn't too happy with the last ones I bought (one or two of them didn't seem to stick to the BP that well anymore).

As I was doing my research on the new pads and trying to decide which pad to get (still not sure yet :crazy2:), I saw a couple of posts that recommended the 5.5" size pad for the 7424. I had always bought the 6.5", not sure why. The reason I was seeing for using the smaller pad was that the 7424 does not have the power of the Cyclo or other, more powerful DA's.

What is the best size to use? I watched the Autogeek video for Speed Channel where he was using a Kompressor pad, but the pad size wasn't mentioned (as far as I could hear).

Thanks,
Neil

I always felt that the smaller the pad, the more efficient the machine could remove defects. If it were me, I'd go for the 5.5 inch between what you've mentioned.

I personally use 5.5 i have some 6.5 pads.. but they just seem too large.. so i would have to say 5.5 all the way!

I've always used 6.5" pads with no problems ... I do not like flat pads as the glue does not seem to last as long as the molded backings ..

:exactly: .... and the flat pads offer no protection around the backing plate for an accident that may occur hitting the edge of the BP on the car

5.5 and smaller is best with the underpowered 7424. With anything bigger then that you cant use much pressure at all without stopping the rotation.

difference in weight of a 6.5" and 5.5" is less than a half ounce of weight :inspector:

I really don't think that difference will slow down the PC under equal pressure ;)

I don't think it's weight that allows the bigger pad to stop the rotation of the pad. I know on my older 7424 (or possibly 7336) that a bigger 6.5+ diameter pad will in fact stop spinning before a smaller 5.5 pad. I think it has to do with more surface area (foam) being in contact with the paint surface. I know for sure the machine I have works a lot more efficiently when removing marring using the smaller pads. Of course, there's a lot of variables in that equation, but I think all-in-all the PC - at least the older machines - are better suited for a smaller diameter pad.

no sure of the physics but all I have ever use on my PC I bought from Dwayne 7 years ago are the 6.5" pads he recommended and they've never let me down :) Again like you said Jared, there are a lot of variables including the products being used. :bigups

I prefer the 5.5 but acually use both. I have a 5 in backing plate so have to be a little more careful when using the 5.5 in pads.
