PC7424 Kit on Autopia

I'm looking at this Sonus PC kit that Dave is selling on the website (Porter Cable 7424 Car Polisher Kit with Foam Polishing Pads) and do you guys know if the grey part in this picture* is a guard** like OctaneGuy sells on his website. If it isn't a guard, what is that gray thing supposed to be, the backing plate to a pad? And as far as newbies are concerned, aside from products and towels, does the Sonus PC kit include everything one would need to start out on detailing as far as the machine stuff is concerned?

What are the benefits of getting the UDM over the PC, Al? Is the UDM pretty much foolproof like the PC too, so that I wouldn't be killing the CC on my car like I would if I tried my hand at a rotary without proper experience? The only thing I can really see about the difference between the UDM and the PC is that it has a different way of jiggling around in the middle of the pad. Don't know how that would work though, since the pad is a single piece and you can't rotate the more inner parts seperately from the outer parts of the pad.
