PC scares me

I bought my new Jet Black BMW a couple of weeks ago. I was out of state last week so its only been washed once so far. However it needs some protection, here in TX its gets pretty hot

I have some Lake Country 7.5 pads, Vanilla Moose hand glaze, vm carnauba wax and EX. I see a few swirls because they prepped it before I picked it up. ( I know they shouldn't have, but seeing it in the showroom was so awesome!).

Will the vm hand glaze get most of those out?

And will it take off whatever they put on it to prep it so I don't have to dawn it?

Should I use it on a polishing pad with the pc?

I'm so scared of anything touching my paint including my pc which I have very little experience with. I'm SO afraid of making more swirls with it or those hologram things.

If the vm hand glaze doesn't take them out will it at least fill them in?

Thanks!! By the way I love my new car!! :D

Another thing, I have a big blue wwmf. I'd like to try the new one out (about $25). However mine isn't really soft, but it soaks up SO much water. Does it matter if its soft or not? Should I get different mf's? Again, just trying to stay marr/swirl free.

Congrats on the new BMW. I used to have a 2002 Ti Silver 330i - great cars!!

No need to be scared of the PC. Very easy to use although it may take some time to really get the most out of it and figure out what prods are most effective for you. Be sure to read DavidB's article regarding PC use at www.autopia-carcare.com - it is a very complete PC article. Those holograms that you are talking about are generally made by rotary buffers in the wrong hands. The PC is much more forgiving.

I have never used VM Hand Glaze before to remove swirls. I have had great success personally with Menzerna Intensive Polish and Final Polish. Yes - if you 'polish' your car you will remove anything that was on it previously. Also, if you haven't clayed your car yet I would highly recommend doing so.

I use PakShak's WWMF for all my drying and I simply lay it on the paint and pat dry - no dragging for me. Check out the Hall of Fame forums regarding Drying Technique and also another thread re: PC use.

Use the SEARCH function - there is a great deal of information regarding all of the questions that you have asked.

I wouldnt be scared of a PC. I too was in your shoes not to long ago and though it was something that could cause major problems. Well 7 months later it is definatly the best thing I have bought yet. They are simple to use and can be used for alot greater results than by hand but still not as good as rotary.

In the end after getting my PC its kinda hard to tell the difference in some sealents now the surface is prepped so well. I would say dont worry about it just get it.

I was all nervous about using my PC also, since I haven't recieved my autopia order yet???? and the PC has been sitting here for the past week I just had to use it. I decided to use it with some Z12 on my windshield and it was awesome, I am fired up to start using it with the 1Z polishes and AIO.

Thanks for the encouragement! Will VM hand glaze take the stuff the dealership put on there off? Do I need a real polish? I was under the impression that I could use the vm as my polish. Don't ask where I got that from..LOL! What could I use off the shelf that would go with vm hand glaze, cmw and ex? Or do I even need a polish?

Glad to hear you're reassured about the PC. It really *IS* that safe and easy to use. Truly nothing to worry about.

No, the VM probably won't do what you want here. The dealer-installed swirls will need an abrasive polish; VM is not that abrasive. A good starting point is 3M's PI-III MG (pn 05937) or Meg's #80 Speed Glaze, both of which should be available in auto paint/body supply places. Or just order something like the Menzerna twins or something from Poorboys'. Any of these products will cut right through whatever's on the finish now, so no need for Dawn.

On the BBT- when it comes to something that touches your paint, softer is better. Maybe try washing it in Micro-Restore. FWIW, I just washed mine a number of times in hot water with NO detergent, it came out a lot softer- but the Micro-Restore made it even better.

I fully agree, I just tried the PI-III MG with a PC this past weekend and was floored at the results.

And I too never thought I'd breakdown and get a PC, but after doing my full size Yukon this past weekend, I couldn't be happier. The learning curve is also very short--since there's no real risk of burning the paint, all you need to do is figure out technique's/pad combo's that work for you.

Would I need to worry about #80 leaving swirls if I don't break it down enough? So would this line-up of products be ok? (I have ssr2, but think thats too agressive. I used it on my old car and don't think I was experienced enough with it. It looked fine under my flourescent lights but looked terrible in the sun when I was finished. )

#80- applied with white lake country pad?

vm hand glaze (is that needed if i'm using speed glaze?)

EX

CMW

Will #80 be ok underneath all that? Bonding issues?

Let me remind you the swirls or spider webs are very very light and minimal believe it or not, even though the dealer made them I'm thoroughly impressed looking at it in the sun. I guess I'm just being picky about whats there.

Thanks!!

Do you guys use 5" or 6" pads ? Advantages/disadvantages to either ?

5" get to smaller/tighter areas ? 6" cover more area with less effort ?

Or is there more than the way I may have oversimplified things ?

Thanks,

Andy

Can anyone answer my questions about #80 and my plan of action? It would be most appreciated!!

Thanks! :D

I will see if the VM and a white pad will take care of it. If not though, I'm coming back to ask again! You hear me?!? lol j/k!

Q;#80- applied with white lake country pad?

vm hand glaze (is that needed if i'm using speed glaze?)

A: No

#80 would probably work great on the dealer installed swirls and it breaks down pretty quickly. I use it with a polishing pad, speed on 6 and work it 6-8 slow passes for each section. I've never noticed any surface marring when used that way. In addition, #80 seems to have a lot of the #81 polishing oils in it so the shine is excellent even without glazing and waxing.

#80/VM/EX would look great on black.

ANB- The #80 should work just fine for what you want. It'll break down quickly. I think you've somehow gotten an exaggerated idea of VM's abilities...don't expect it to do any real paint correction. It might make for a little improvement after the #80, try it and see.

AndyW- I use 6" or 6.5" pads for almost everything I do with a PC or rotary. They actually get into tight spots *better* than the smaller pads- the extra pad that overhangs beyond the backing plate (and the head of the machine) makes this possible. You can even use the edge of the pad as long as you're careful. Generally, I go to *bigger* pads to solve this sort of problem (sometimes even 7.5" pads or the Meg's 8" ones). The only time I use smaller pads is when I want to do a spot-repair without working a large area.
