I want one pretty badly. So I searched the web and turned up a model 7336 at a local tool store for $95. What is the difference between the model 7336, 7336SP and 7427? Anything major?
Actually, as I am finding out, the 7336 is the one to get. If you get the 7424, you have to get the 6" counterweight, but if you get the 7336, it comes with it. They are the same tool, but sold with different counterweights. The pads you're going to want to use are all 6 or 6.5 inches, so will require the 6" counterweight. Go ahead and get the 7336.
2wheelsx2 is mostly correct. Here's the difference:
7336: Standard PC sander with 6" counterweight.
7336SP: Standard PC sander with 6" counterweight, plus a polishing pad with built in backer plate. I wouldn't recommend using it as it may have the bolt close to the surface of the foam.
7427: I think you mean 7424. It is identical to the 7336 except that it has a 5" counterweight. If you buy the velcro backer pad from CMA or Griot's, it will be a 6" size and you'd want to switch out the weight for a 6".
I...turned up a model 7336 at a local tool store for $95.
Clarification: I wouldn't use the included pad (at least on my car). The machine is the same in all cases. Only the counterweight and backer pad is different between the 7424 & 7336 models (5" v. 6" respectively).
By the way, a 9 before the model number (i.e. 97336) is a kit version of the machine, including a case and dust collection kit (hose and shroud). If you're a woodworker, then the 97336 might be a better value.
The pads are velcro and you will need to get a velcro backing plate, as the included plate is for adhesive backed disks. CMA's Porter Cable Accessory Kit is your answer to all your needs.
Our DM-KIT includes:
One 6 inch Velcro Back-up Plate
One 6 inch Lambswool Compounding Pad for leveling the surface (the Lambswool pad is also used as a cushion under the
terry bonnets)
One 6 inch Yellow Cutting Pad for older, oxidized finishes
Two 6 inch white polishing/waxing pads
One 6 inch gray finishing pad for producing an ultra high gloss
You can also think about the DeWalt right angle Radon orbital sander. Looks just like the PC except it is dewalt yellow/orange.
If comes with a more powerful motor than the PC. I also ran it about 1 1/2 hours this past weekend and it wasn't even getting warm yet. It also comes standard with a velcro backplating.
I have also heard from local dist. of porter cable products that they have a quality control problem.
