PC Pad Help

FAST SVT

I just bought a Porter Cable, and I have been reading threads all day about pads. 20+ pages of threads. With every passing thread, I get more and more confused. I read the sticky about the pads and that didn't really help either. Will someone just tell me what pads I need to buy, how many, and from which store for each of the following Poorboy's products:

-SSR-1

-SSR-2.5

-Polish wth Carnuba

-EX-P

I have read about Sonus Pads, LC Pads, CMA Pads, etc. My paint is white and has some swirls in it (not terrible though). Please help a PC noob out. Thanks in advance.

Well knowing exactly where you are coming from ill try and help out:

You said your swirls arent bad so what I would do is use SSR 2.5 with a polishing pad.

Then when you are done with that inspect your paint to see if there are swirls still there or if you have noticed some little scratches...if this is so then either go back over it with 2.5 again (if swirls are still there) or if there are scratches or marring go down to SSR 1 with a polishing pad.

When you are satisfied I would just go straight to EX-P by hand OR you could use a finishing pad.. Either one would be suffice.

To me..a pad is a pad for starters like me and you. With that being said I would purchase my pads from Exceldetail.com.. Patrick there is an awesome guy to deal with, not to mention his pad prices cant be beat! Right now they are 6.88 a piece which is really really good! Email him and he can definitely help you.. also you may want to order some nice microfibers from him to clean up the polish. I hope this helps you..if not feel free to ask and ill do my best with what knowledge I have accumalated.

Thanks.

So I should buy a couple White pads? What about using an Oranage pad with the SSR 2.5? Would it be more effective then?

Also, what should I buy in terms of a backing for the pad? Maybe a 5" backing for some 6.5" pads?

Well if you buy from Exceldetail.com he has a Pad Kit special. You get a 5" backing plate, 2 - 6.5" polishing pads and 1 - 6.5" finishing pads all for 29.99. Also he has a shipment of cutting pads coming in I believe this week so I would throw in 1 or 2 of those and your total wouldnt come up but to about 50 shipped which is a heck of deal.

I and others recommend getting more polishing pads than anything else. If you are just using this stuff on your car or 1 or 2 more other cars I suggest about 2-4 polishing pads, 1 cutting, and maybe 1 finishing.

Using a cutting pad with SSR 2.5 would be more effective yet could cause more problems that what you have. You could possibly induce more swirls with that. A cutting pad and 2.5 is recommended for paint that has major major swirls or defects. I would definitely say try 2.5 with polishing first and if that doesnt get it go over again. If you are done and still see bad swirls then use 2.5 with cutting.

Not to confuse the issue but since the questions brought up are very good do you think the blue polishing pad from Excel may be too fine to use effectively with SSR 2.5? It's very similar to the Sonus DAS blue pad--for use with final polishes and glazes. While I haven't tried this yet, I would think that the Excel green pad (light cutting) would be a better match. With SSR 1, I'm not sure, may be determined by the hardness of your paint. Blue pad for soft, green pad for harder paint. Been meaning to call Patrick about this. still wondering how aggressive his new yellow pads are.

Funny you ask that gearhead. I have tried 2.5 with Excel's polishing pad and my pad began to break. Patrick and I have been talking a while about it to come up with the problem and we believe SSR 2.5 is too abrasive for the pad and only the cutting should be used with it. I believe im going to send him back the pad and he is going to send it to his manufactorer along with a sample of SSR 2.5 to see the problem.
