PC Pad "Cutting" Protection ring

If this happens to you then perhaps I have a fix. After using firm pressure with some DACP I realized the edge of my backing plate "cut" into the foam. LC pads just don't have much "loop" material on them. Right? CMA pads do have that extra material if your using a 5" pad. Does this look familiar?

I got some thin foam from Hobby Lobby, measured for some overlap onto the loop material and cut this protection cirlce.

Used it on a new pad and it worked just fine. Next "ring" I'll cut clear out to the edge of the pad but the "hole" just needs to be something under 1/2" of overlap onto the loop part of the pad. Not completely finished my "testing" but wanted to share this anyway. Even cranked it up to 6 and everything was just fine. YOUR results might vary but I would be surprised if it didn't work for you. You might experiment first to verify it does work for you before you try it out.

As I have said. no problems so far and please fell free to post any comments or improvements you may have. The foam is dense and thin and I did not use the sheet that has sticky stuff on one side. Cost 79 cents and you can make a couple of rings from it.:usa

I always thought CMA pads=LC pads

At any rate, ingenious idea! :xyxthumbs

Great idea!!!

This is one of the reasons I like the variable contact pads from LC. There is a recessed plastic "cup" where the velcro is, more secure and more prection against hitting the paint with the backing plate.

Thanks to all.

mpauly,

Are those LC 7.5" pads? I've always wondered how well they work. I thought they were ment for rotary use and were too big "at the edge" for effective contact pressure from a 5" backing plate. I am assuming you have no problems like that if you are using them with a PC. Is that correct?

Edit: Just saw them on Top of the Line site. I see that "cup" your talking about. I wonder how many other people use these?

Also, I forgot to add I didn't "glue" the ring on so it is easily removed for cleaning the pad. I keep thinking the ring might "slip" but it hasn't yet.

Very smart idea... what I did is a little different... I taped a rubber gasket like thing around the backing plate's edge... since we (at the shop) had to change pads quite often, it's easier this way. But GREAT post and idea... :)
