PC/DA Edge pad's

I got some today and not happy with them. I was really disappointed in how thin they are. It bring's the backing plate to close to the paint IMO. Also don't like the hole in the middle which I think is a crap collector (atleast it was on the simialr one's I had before) The foam does not seem very soft, and the pad has straight edge's on it , both on the outside edge and where the hole is .

Did I miss something or order the wrong one's for my PC ??? . The website had nothing on it about the hole's or the thickness of them. I have not used them , and probably won't either . I'm sure they are good quality , but surely not what I expected after hearing all the rave's about them. To me they feel cheap , but I'm no expert and am probably wrong , but I needed pad's bad , real bad, since I have a few more car's to do over the next week or so.

I'll have to try to get over to LC MFG. to pick some up to get me through the next week or so. Lucky it's only a 10 mile's from my house , but I just don't have time to do it.

Just had to rant .....

Before you make claims to the product dissappointing you , you should at least try them out and give them a fair test . This goes with any product not just the Edge pads. I can remember back to the first time I bought AIO my first thoughts were this stuff is crap ,how can it be any good its thinner then water. Its now one of my favorites I use all the time.

No expert? Probably wrong?

I think you should at least use a product before writing it off. At least then you can say that you gave it a fair shake.

If you are using velcro backed Edge DA pads you have to use a 5 inch backing plate. No need to have a backing plate that close to the edge of the foam pad.

Edge Durafoam is really high quality in my humble opinion.

As I stated I'm sure it's not a bad product , but the feel cheap probably because they are thin to me . I'm sure with all the user's of them they are NOT a bad product. Sorry, I did'nt mean to imply that.

By to close I'm talking about to the surface of the vehicle & not to the edge of the pad. The to close to the vehicle come's from the pad's being thin & OK I'll give them a try , it's just not what I'm use to. I like have more beef to a pad tan these have.

I have a variety of PC pads in my arsenal. To this date, I have not come across any that I could call my ideal pad. Some pads come closer to my ideal than others, but each model has its own set of pros and cons. Regarding the Edge DA Durafoam pads, my favorite part of this model is the foam. It is very durable, cleans up more easily than any other I've used, and keeps more of the product on the surface which allows me to use up less product. My least favorite part of this model is the blunt cut outer edge. I prefer a beveled cut which will more easily traverse bumps and curves in the sheetmetal. The center hole allows the pad to be centered more easily. This feature is not as important for a dual action machine, but it is quite valuable if you intend to use the pad on a rotary buffer. I'm also not sure I understand the issue regarding the thickness of the Edge DA pad. Compared to LC pads of similar diameter, the Edge pads seem thicker to me. Here is a photo that I posted a while ago in a thread regarding PC pad comparisons. The featured pads are as follows (actual measured diameter at widest point in parentheses) -

Yellow, Lake Country Variable Contact (5 7/8")
Blue, Edge2000 DA (6")
Green, Edge Durafoam DA (6 1/4")
Black, Lake Country "Advanced" Curved Edge (7 3/4")
White, Edge2000 Rotary (9 1/8")

I'm not concerned about the diameter so much but the thickness and beveled or rounded edges. Also thuicker pad's seem to handle corner's , body curves much better IMO.

Just to clarify, the Edge DA pads are wider AND thicker than their Lake Country counterparts. Here is another photo which shows the relative thickness side by side. I agree that beveled or rounded edges are easier to control around curves. Beveled profiles also allow the pad to squeeze into close fitting areas more easily. I've often said that I would like to see a pad made of the Edge DA material but cut into the shape of a Lake Country Curved Edge pad.

I actually just tried Edge pads for the first time and have to say I really like them I used the blue pad for AIO and it did a great job. The think I really like was that it cleaned up really well.
