PC and SSR - what speed to use?

hi, what speed shall i use with a porter cable 7424 and a yellow cutting pad with SSR 2.5 and then a green polishing pad with SSR 1.0?

wow! i didn't know it was to use in the top speed, thought it was to use at 3/4 :lol:

with the green pad what do you mean 3-5.5? do i start at 3 and finish at 5.5?

Oops, green pad hit it around 3.0 to 4.5 OPM...Sorry about the typo.
 
From my experience, if you go with 2.5 and yellow to SSR 1 and green, you will be left with micromarring that produces a hazy appearance in your paint. If you are using the yellow and 2.5, follow that w/ a green pad and 2.5. Allow that to breakdown completely and then proceed to the green pad and SSR 1. I think you will be much happier with the results!

yes i've noticed that that you said JJ, i'll be using the yellow with 2.5 and then green with 2.5. i have a bit of 2.0, maybe 2.5 yellow, 2.0 green and 1.0 green, what you reccon? ;)
 
That sounds like it would work as well. JUst begin on a 2x2 panel to see what works best.

Personally I find that going to 6 on the PC with SSR2.5 dries it out way too quick for my liking, so I don't go any higer than 5 now. OK it may mean it takes a little longer to polish, but it does eliminate the need for a second application in the majority of cases.

no mean to hijack, but how long should it take to go over a 2x2 section with the 2.5 on a yellow? I recently tried PC for the first time and did not get good results at all. Still a few larger scratches and micromarring.
 
Sometimes to correct will take multiple passes. Work the area till the polish breaks down, and then try the same another couple off times. Remeber the PC can only remove so may defects before a Rotary is needed.



If the PC isnt cutting it before giving up maybe think about using 4 inch spot pads in the troublesome areas.
 
the thing is, it's really only small swirls. also, ssr 2.5 seems to break down real quick.



one question though, is it really bad to run a dry pad? I'm often worried about working too long and running a dry pad against it.
 
With experience you'll begin to notice when the polish has broken-down. With the SSRs, you will notice that they begin to clear (almost disappear) or they will begin to dust. At this time, you should stop, wipe, and inspect. A dry pad is not a good idea at all but, just remember, do not prime the pads, when using the SSRs, with water. This information comes from Steve (owner of PBs).



If you find the SSRs are drying up on you, reduce the speed of the PC and be sure you're not using too much polish. Remember 2oz should complete a midsized car.

I've used S&G with some success but, usually, I just prime with the product itself. This happens after 1 panel usually. The pad soaks-up alot of SSR before it becomes primed however.

thanks for the excellent tips so far. I tried using the 2.5 on a light cutting pad (propel orange) and i try to do a whole mess of passes. I've been practicing on a black car and there still seems to be a lot of light scratches, most of the swirls are gone, but then again still some left.



I find that it becomes almost haze like and when i wipe it off, it takes a bit of force.. does this mean i'm working too long, not long enough, too high speed, not high enough speed?
 
In wiping off the residue I assume its OK to use a water spritz to make it eaier? I have been and it seems to work well.

However, sometimes it takes a REALLY long time to find the answer to something specific while it only takes a person with experience only a few minutes to respond. The whole point of this forum is to help each other and to answer questions, it might as well be a database if you don't like people asking questions that have been answered since almost ALL questions have been answered somwhere in these forums.
