PC 7428 Speed Dial

Calling all Porter Cable 7428 Users!



I'm trying to master my PC 7428 Circular Polisher. One thing that is holding me back is the speed dial setting. More precisely, my lack of knowledge of how to use the speed dial setting.



The dial is labeled 1 - 6.

It starts at 1, and ends at 6.

The specs rate it at 1,000 rpm to 3,000 rpm.



It doesn't seem to be going at 1,000 rpm when it's set at "1", the lowest setting. It seems to be considerably lower than 1,000 rpm. I'm not sure how low though. I don't see anything in the manual that gives me a dial setting to rpm conversion.



I seem to have some good results when using it in the 2 1/2 - 3 range. I'm not sure what rpm this is. This is my first experience with a circular, so I can't really judge it's speed by just looking at it. I read the thread on circular usage, but you really have to know what your rpm setting you're at to begin with !



Anyone have some specs available for the 7428? or even any tips on it's use will help.
 
1=1000

2=1400

3=1800

4=2200

5=2600

6=3000



I agree it seems slow at 1000rpms. I run mine at 2-3 as well and I get good results from it. Like all rotaries, ya gotta experiment a little with speeds to find what works for you. I use different speeds on my DeWalt so there's not always a direct correlation between machines.

It's a nice machine and somewhat easier to use than the DeWalt, in my experience. Enjoy!

So it is a linear increase from 1000 rpm!

I'll keep experimenting with speeds and techniques. I introduced some swirls on my hood this past weekend with the speed dial set below 2. I gave up with the rotary and went back to the 7424, which did fine in removing the swirls. I was puzzled because I used the rotary with some fairly good results a few months ago. Later on, thinking back to what I did differently, I remember cranking up the speed to the 2-1/2 - 3 range.

Maybe I'll practice on my wifes car next time. :)
