PC 7424 Basic or Ultimate?

Which one does everybody get? Is it better to get the ultimate with the pads or the basic and buy the pads/pad kit separately? A little advice please. :huh

I bought the PC separate and then bought 2 sets of different pads to experiment. I think it's up to you but I'll defer to the experts here since I only have 2 weeks of crammed wisdom since joining DC !

Which pads should I get for newer cars; one black, one silver metallic? 5" or 6". Hook & loop backing pad or velcro. Any tips would be helpful. How do you use the pads? RPM etc. Do you buff off the cleaner, sealer, wax etc with the PC? I'm obviously new. I thought I'd do everything by hand, but upon reviewing the many posts, the PC is the way to go. What about buying from Coastal Tool? Thanks in advance.

Hi Jon, andwelcome :welcome
maybe this will help

Jon, I ordered mine from that website and also ordered 2 sets of pads, the SONUS line and the EDGE ones sold at PAC. I figure I'll use one set for MY car and the other for everybody elses (don't want their crud on my pads! lol).

Whatever you do, I'd think you'd want at least 1 complete set. You don't want to normally use only 1 or 2 pads and then 1 day find you need a finer/more aggressive pad and then have to go out and buy it or order it online. Better to have a complete set in reserve -- I would guess at some point you'll use them all (if not on your car, then maybe on someone else's car which you do).

Thanks HondaMan. Did you get the 5" or 6"? Hook & loop backing pad or velcro? What about the bonnets, are they included and do you use those to buff off the wax, cleaner etc.?

Man, are YOU asking the wrong guy!!! lol.

Seriousley, even though I'm into this whole detailing thing over 3 weeks, I'll give it a trey: I have the standard 5" attachment that the PC comes with....most of the pads (as I understand it) will fit that size nicely, if they're tight/snug on the 6" then they'll overlap even more for extra protection on the 5" (I believe they stretch).

I think I have the hook attachment (it came with the PC) and the SONUS thing comes with the velcro stuff (?).

Again, I just ORDERED mine and haven't used it -- probably this weekend for the 1st time. Check out Dwayne's EDGE pads here and the PC links elsewhere -- if you can't find them, post it here and I'll try to copy them. Look for some of my threads in this area of DC specifically titled "Porter Cable" etc. I asked a bunch of basic questions on this a week or so ago and some of the Vets were kind enough to post plenty of links.

Oops..almost forgot...I ordered bonnets and I have 2 complete sets. So I am prepared for anything. On my car, I am probably only going to use it for fine/ultrafine use...on my mom's car, I will probably use the more aggressive pads (I think they refer to these as the "cutters").

Hope I didn't give out any bad info. Again, check the posts that others responded to me elsewhere in the "Welcome" section and defer to their judgement. They've been using the PC for years, I just go mine and it's still in the box.

"Hook and Loop" is just another description for "Velcro" (the brand name).

Bonnets are generally used for removing product, though many people prefer to just use high quality microfiber towels to remove product by hand. Bonnets have elastic to stretch over pads. The pads themselves do not stretch.

Pads, like most detailing products, are a matter of personal preference. There are many different shapes, sizes, textures, and mounting devices available to choose from. As HondaMan suggested, look up some of the recent discussion threads on this topic. You can find these by using the Search function with terms like "porter cable", "pads", or "orbital". You'll come up with dozens of helpful threads. Here's one to get you started -

Hey HondaMan!! All I need to do is read all your threads and I'm getting all the answers to all of the questions I don't need to ask anymore. :Thanks

Great!! Nice to know someone besides me can use the information...I was feeling guilty bugging all the nice folks here at DC !! lol
