Painting with A Spray Can

I've have not painted in this manner for a very looong time....

I'm doing a slight restor. of some sorts to a snowblower.

Replacement decals are $$$ so I'll be keeping the decals on the paint

Here are my steps

- prep (clean, scuff, etc)

- tape off decals

- prime

- remove tape off decals while wet

- apply new tape over decals

- apply paint

(wash and repeat remove tape while wet, apply, another coat)

Is there some magic mojo on NOT removing the tape at all ?

How do the pros do this in the bodyshop.....

My issue with the tape over decal issue, is I won't want any lines nor take the chance of *lifting paint* when removing tape after the paint has dried.

The tape or type of tape is not the issue.

If I leave the tape on, paint 4 layers (primer - 3 light coats of paint to get a nice level single coat)....and then remove the tape -- I'm concerned about *lifting* the edges of the paint that is around the perimeter-edge of where the tape was.

Similar to how when you paint a wall/ceiling/trim - you remove the tape while the edge is still wet...

I would be afraid that lifting the tape when wet would make the edges rougher. I have never done that myself.

Also, I find that the 3M lime green tape works best for me. Really good, tight masking lines, is more flexible and it doesn't bleed. My body shop uses this as well.

Hmm......I do have the green tape and I suppose I'll do a test sample just to see how it behaves if I let it dry and then remove the tape.

Who am I kidding . The OPE will probably be a garage queen but she may see some light action.

My premise on the remove tape while wet....is I have always done this when painting interiors...but it's generally not light coats but a solid brush roll overlapping the tape itself, which if left to dry.....the resulting effect would be lifting paint off the substrate/medium
