"Painting" rotors

Here's the deal. I just bought new front and rear disks for my m3. As we all know, if you don't paint the hub it will rust. Now i really like the raw metal look of new rotors and don't want to paint them a different color. I came up with the idea of spraying 4-6 coats of just clear on the metal to protect it from the elements. This way i still have to look of the raw part.



Has anyone tried this or have any thoughts about it? I was on a quest today to find a clear coat with more then a 500deg rating and failed. I did a quick search online and found this:

I think i'm going to order a can or two but i want to get a few opinions on this first before a spend $25+ on 2 cans of clear coat.
 
Yeah i've painted my brakes on my other car with good results. The question here is will the clear hold up the same as a normal paint, will it change color, etc.... I don't know anyone who has tried this. Maybe i should just go ahead with it and post my results.

Sometimes the only way to determine if something will work is to try it. I guess if the clearcoat does yellow you can always have the rotors bead blasted and plated. If you do it please keep us in the loop as this would be a very low cost alternative to plating.:up
 
I have painted mine with a Hammerite smooth paint, holds up well apart from where the wheel touches the rotor hub and the paint has came away.
 
Yeah i have no problem painting them guys. I've done that before and they look great. The question here is just using clear coat with no paint.

I can't beleive your new rotors aren't coated!

I just swapped mine out for Powerslots, and the difference is night & day; coated rules!(and no more painting to worry about)
 
I bought Brembo and Zimmerman rotors. I got a great deal on these. If anyone needs brakes for their e36 BMW PM me and i'll give you the info. Here is what I got.

Thanks for the compliments. Too bad my Type R sits in storage all winter..I think that I've even forgot how it drives!

As far as aftermarket "coated" rotors are concerned, I'm not sure that the finish won't corrode. I had the cadmium coating on my Stillen rotors wear off after about a year.

are there any advantages as far as protection to doing this?



any time i see a car up on a rack gettings its brakes done, rotors and drums and such are rusted out like mad. .
 
Not really much protection needed. But the real advantage, besides much improved looks, is that it's far easier to maintain the cleanliness of a smooth painted surface. :up
 
I'm going to decide what to do tonight. In the end it's a minor detail and it's going to cost me 3-4 times as much to order the clear and have it shipped then to just buy some high temp paint locally.



Dean did you put clear over you paint?
 
No, I didn't but I think that it should work fine. I'm thinking about spraying a coat of hi-temp clear over the front brake calipers on my 1997 Supra. The OEM clear coat is chipping, but the dark basecoat and "Supra" lettering is intact.
