I have a 95 Short bed step side 1500 Chevy truck that I would like to get painted a new color. I know nothing about getting a truck/car painted. How much should I expect to pay? What are some quality aspects that I should be aware of to make sure I ask about? I want it done right.

Visit a few diferent paint shops and look at the quality of work, is a good first step. You can save a lot of money by doing some of the prep work yourself ie removing trim etc
 
Hard to tell what you are going to pay. The shop I use does excellent work but does not charge much. However it will take them a month or two to paint it because they do all of their non insurance jobs after hours and weekends. But some things you are going to want to make sure they do...

You want them to take off ALL trim, door handles, bumpers, lights, tail gate, mouldings, side view mirrors and anything else they can gets off. You do not want them taping anything off like that and you get a much better job if the bumpers or anything else that needs to be painted gets painted seperate.
 
Problem is if they do a pearl or metallic paint job it's usually best to have the car totally assembled before painting so the effect will lay the same all around .

Doing the prep work yourself will save you money though . Sanding the body with 400 grit until it shows no more gloss at all and removing any trim would be a lot of labor time deducted . Then just tell them that when they remove trim that you didnt to please sand those area that were unreachable with 400 also .

Make sure your paper is soaked and make sure to switch paper after every 2 fenders or after the hood is done . Use a foam block
 
Ideally, the engine should also be removed.



If you remove all the trim it is also a perfect time to clean it to perfection. Order new clips etc so that the old trim can be easily refitted
