Painters' Truck~Removing Spilled Paint

rw3829

PC + Patience = Reward!
Hey guys! I searched this for a bit and feel I may have found a answer but looking for a bit more input. I have a detail coming up in 2 weeks for a guy who owns a painting company. He has a 2005 Dodge Dakota that is packing a Hemi I hear, making me think this is a nice rig. The truck has been described to me as having led a miserable life to date. It is a lease and supposedly trashed and he wants to turn it back in soon. It is, of course, black, and has paint "blobs" spilled on it from carelessness. I assume clay is a start in removing some of this, but does anyone have any thoughts about other procedures before I get to it? The vehicle is 2 hours away from me in Charleston, SC so I am getting this info through a friend who lives down there and got me the job. This guy is getting me to do his Silverado (better shape I hear) and his Cobra as well, so I want to do the best I can to maybe further my business down that way. Thanks for all that you guys do here...It really helps!

I recently used Goof-Off and paper towels to successfully remove dried latex overspray from a Chevy truck that clay wouldn't budge (I'd still start with clay). The latex paint smears and gums up your wiping cloth / rag / microfiber pretty quickly which is why I switched to paper towels with some nap. Double layer the paper towels and then fold into quarters and you will have eight sides to work with. Do this in a well ventilated place (outside) and it would help to wear chemical resistant rubber gloves as this stuff is brutal on your hands. The truck needed polishing, so I wasn't too worried about micomarring from the paper towels.

Don't do it! How much do you think he's going to pay you if he's turning it in? Last time I did this the customer was telling me what my charges were, lol. If you like working for slave labor give it a shot. With dried on paint, on a smoking hot black car in the temporate south, I would run fast.

The only way I'd do it is if they paid me VERY well, and even then I wouldn't gaurantee anything. Either way, if you do tackle this job, then we all expect you to bring a boat-load of pics!

Hey guys thanks for the replies! I am anxious to see pics sent to me from my buddy down there...kinda hoping it has been over-exaggerated a bit...lol! I am going to be solely responsible for the paint while my friend tackles interior duty. I am charging him $200.00 and he already knows not to expect miracles (his own words), so I figure if I can make any progress at all he will be ok with it. I do love a challenge, but I found out it was black the day after I agreed...lol! Talk about a downer...Anyway, he has agreed to $200.00 for the Dodge and another $100.00 for his Silverado in way better shape (read: not used for painting!). Another hundred for his Cobra as well so it could be a nice score once the "disaster" is out of the way...lol. My goal is to make this guys' head turn in disbelief. I set my goals high...I'm packing Hi-Temp Heavy Cut, Medium Cut, Light Cut, Optimum Compound and Polish, rotary, pc, new LC wool and foam pads, clay, etc. I'm packing! Believe me, I can hold 224 pics on my digital camera and plan to use em' up! My bud told me the same thing, so it must be a doozy! Sorry for the long post guys but when I start I cannot stop! Take care and look for results a week from Saturday!

well I haven't had a chance to try them yet, but I got a container of Sprayway Road Paint Remover wipes from TOL with my last order.

I got them to try and get rid of something on the lower fenders and rockers that I think is some kind of paint splatter.

I talked to them before I ordered it and the tech guy said it's not a wipe on wipe off, afair. You need to let the towel saturate the stuff you want to remove.

Again I have not tested it out yet.

Hey Morbid, I was just looking at those...If you get a chance, let us know how it works out. I read you have to lay the wipe over the spot and let it soak a minute, then turn it over and really wipe it vigorously...

I'm probaly not going to get to it till the weekend, but may try on Wendesday cuz I should have a day off from working last weekend. I just got this order in last week and I'm chompin at the bit to see if this stuff works.

When I talked to the guy over at TOl, the said I could use a plastic razor blade that came with the touch-up magic I ordered too.

But you get the idea already, the solution in the wipes needs to break the bond of the paint from the panel.

Your packing some of my favorite products already (I love the Hi-Temp line, esp the Heavy Cut, and well all know about Optimum)

Yea, I tried Hi-Temp products on a spur of the moment purchase. I figured for the money I could not lose...and now I love their stuff! I am quite anxious to try out Optimum from the countless reviews I have read here. I am considering HT Extreme Cut for those really tough jobs, but so far, I have not encountered anything the others won't handle. I am going to buy the wipes anyway to try as they sound like a good product. Thanks again...

well if you get to use them b4 me give some feedback. They are cheap enough to keep around in one's kit "just in case"

Yeah Anthony O turned me on to HT Heavy Cut and at the time I was going to order some Extreme but he told me he's rarely had to use his bottle.

HCL is my "goto" polish and I'll finish it off with OCP when needed. You should get some good results.

Take lot's of Pics so we can see your work on this "impossible" job :)

You got it! Sadly enough I cannot wait to get started on it...but I'm sure that will change soon after I start on it! Til then, you guys take care and may all your details be rewarding...

Just letting you know that this is the weekend for this nightmare detail! I'm heading to Charleston in the morning early and getting started as soon as I arrive (around 10:00 AM). Also, I recently purchased the Sprayaway Industrial Wipes from TOTL to help in removing the spilled paint. I go to Advance Auto tonight and what do I see? Industrial Wipes on a shelf behind me while at the counter! Not Sprayaway but describes as doing the exact same thing...Thing about it is TOTLs' wipes are $12.00 plus shipping and these were $5.00! Oh well, we'll see how it goes as I am sure the paint has had plenty of time to "cure" by now. I'll be taking plenty of pics for you guys and hopefully I will make you proud...See ya' soon!

Dude don't tell me that, I need to get out more often and stop shopping on the web :)

Good luck and we'll be waiting for some pic's. Remember the solution in the wipes needs to saturate the paint you want to remove.

I tired them on a spot on one of the rockers last weekend. Like the man said it wasn't magic but I did manage to get alot more off than with just clay. I Polished it out with some TOL Power Prep afterwards. Still got a bit to go.

Problem is my Audi sits low and working on the rockers is PITA

Man I bet that Audi is a trip to work on...Hope you reach the desired results you are after. I really wish I knew how long the paint has been on there, because all I have is those wipes and clay. I'm not looking for perfection, but I'm gonna give it all I got. I'll try to start posting tomorrow afternoon if time permits but will probably be Sunday. Take care!

Worse case is you could try some Lacquer thinner (a little bit) on a rag on a inconspiqous spot and see if that works. You'll need to come behind it with something to make sure there's no residue left on the paint.

I would work those towels first. Once you wipe the product on the surface it stays wet (I was working in a garage and not in the Sun) so you can let it soak for a few and move on to another spot then come back and run some more.

I'm not too worried about the Rockers, they are plastic and not too hard to remove. I'll sand and repaint them over the summer worse comes to worse.

Hang in there and think positive.

Hello guys...Got back from Charleston tonight around 9:15 pm...Damn tired I must say, but could not wait for you guys to see this mess. I took a bunch of pics of this truck but ran out of battery life before I could take pics of the second truck (not as bad as the first anyway). I am going to start a new post with pics but here is a little something to horrify you...
