I've used the magnet version for 10 years and it works pretty well. I can't remember ever going past a half mil even after wetsanding. There are 2 faults with this tool: First, it won't work on a range rover hood or any panels that are aluminum and second, it takes practice to get the gauge to hold steady for a read because the spring pulls back the guage quickly as you pull it away from the panel. Still, its good insurance before buffing out a car that may not have a lot of paint left on it. I find that almost all late model cars have about 6 mils. Occasionally I'll find a panel that has 10-12 mils which means it was repainted and I'll look out for bodywork.
