Paint Thickness Gauges

I need a new job
Do you pros here use a paint thickness gauge for the clearcoat before you begin detailing? Anyone encountered a clear coat that was too thin to buff?

The gauge will give you the thickness to the metal, not just the clear. At least the one I used at an old job I had was like that.

The one I see mentioned most often and seems most favored because it has a probe is the ETG line, typically the ETG one. In general these things aren't cheap starting around $300. The most immeidate source I know of online that posts prices is autoint.com under equipment in the store link.

$300 is not too bad when you think of the cost of a repaint because you did not check the thickness.

Thanks.

$300 is for an ETG Mini, no probe. The full ETG units with probes start over $400 to past $800. But true, beats the hassle and expense associated with a re paint.
