Paint meters

Don't you mean "1.5 mil of *clearcoat* thickness" ;)

Oops, I guess I didn't make that clear, did I?

Yes, 1.5 mil clear coat thickness.

I've not read all the postings so I hope this is not redundant

I often use for my initial reading something under the hood, trunk, or quarter panel that has not been clear coated. This gives me a "rough Idea" of how much clear was put on the car. I always get worried if I see readings (on top side of a car) of under 4mills I get concerned, if they are 3.5mills I don't get aggressive with the paint at all.

I would love to hear what others do.

Fantastic suggestion! I will def need to follow your lead on that one!!:woot:

ScottWax- Heh heh, I don't get to correct *you* very often :D I only brought that up so somebody wouldn't get all  when they took a reading and thought they had a zillion layers of repaint on there.

Greg Nichols- I thought you might show up on this thread! I kinda left you hanging about the PhaseII and I felt bad about that, but it was because I keep having so much trouble getting consistent readings. I sent my first one back, convinced it was defective, but the second one works the same for me :nixweiss One of these days I'll call 'em up and see if they can help sort me out. I keep thinking it's *gotta* be me and not the ETG, but sheesh, this isn't anything I'd consider remotely challenging and I do fine with every other (different) gauge I borrow.

I really like your idea about testing the uncleared areas, but I'll add one caveat:

Try to find a place where the uncleared paint appears to be thick. There are areas on the MPV where they just *barely* misted basecoat on there and a few centimeters over there's a *MUCH* thicker application. Lousy build-quality alright, but I think people need to watch out for that. Probaly wouldn't be an issue on the Audis, and I'll be interested to take some readings on them...if I can get this gauge to work for me.

thanks Accumulator, yes I agree the caveat is something you must consider. I usually do several readings in an area to get an "average" of sorts. With the PTG that are less than 2000$ you don't get individual layer readings, so this is only a best guess of a baseline.

I hope people that are using PTG consider all "things" one must remember when using a PTG.

My PTG has probally saved me 1000$ in costs, because I reduce my accidents by knowing how much I can polish out and the customer really feels like they are getting knowledge that is worthwhile.
