Paint Meter/Thickness Gauges!

I would get the one with the external probe. That wasnt available when I bought mine :(

A few things to keep in mind. Exact measurements are hard to get. Say for instance you measure 5 areas on a panel. The chances you are going to measure the EXACT five same spots are slim. Also almost all gauges have some margin of error which can throw readings off slightly by a few ulms. Use the gauge as a generaly guide to see areas of paint's thickness, not an exect measurement.

I'm ordering next week... I mainly want to use it as a precaution for ss paint... I've been working on a few cars and had to go easy on the paint, fearing that I would bring out the shine and glossiness of the primer :p

3.5 to 5.5 Mils (87 - 137 Micros) TOTAL film, with clear coats about 1.5 to 2.0 Mils thick. You cannot remove more than .3 to .5 mils, or else you risk UV Damage & Clearcoat failure.

Gauges:

AutoInt ETG1 - $325

PosiTec DFT - $500

PosiTec 6000 - $+1500 (Includes software to show charts)

Take into consideration the year, condition, and desired results. Otherwise meters are extremely essential for professional results!

Thanks guys! :up

And thanks Silva for the added information; exactly what I was looking for.. :2thumbs:

I agree. Especially for high-end exotic and expensive vehicles.

No matter how much it costs, it sure pays for itself many times over, depending on the market segment that you are in.

I'd also like to hear an update on these gauges. 1bluecls, lecchilo, tdekany...was it "money well spent", or a "should've gotten something else"? I woudn't mind getting a paint gauge especially for ss paint and higher end cars.

If they did it was due to variability in measurement technique, not from the thickness of wax.

The thickness of a layer of wax is way, way, way smaller than the ability of any paint thickness meter to read.

PC.

Yes and the sensitivity of the meter will counter the difference in measurement.

I've not used it, but pretty sure it only reads steel and not aluminum. I can't find detailed specs on this brands. i.e. accuracy, if it rounds, precision, etc.

\r\n\r\nI have seen a few people with it at dealer auctions. From what they tell me, it works better than all of the paint meters under $500. The HighLine Paint Meter Gauge has a website at Paint Meter, Paint Gauge - HighLineMeter.com and according to the description, it is supported by the Elcometer people. As most of you know, Elcometer is the most reputable paint gauge company around and their \'orange\' 311 Milgage is very popular among car professionals. For $249.99, the HighLine Paint Thickness Meter Gauge is definitely the best deal out there.'

^^^^

While the above meter sounds great please consider the error % and the interval reading in both mils and um. I've noticed this company does not post that info, I've emailed them for more info. If all things are equal the highline might be a consideration. However you usually get what you pay for, and I think the accuaracy will be less than the PTG by Phase II 3550.
