paint gauges

Question for the Zaino fans.

Someone here posted that they had used the Z2 on their Windscreen. Did you use Z1 first? I used Z2 on its own and the visibility was nothing short of dangerous when it rained. Greasy is the best word to describe it. Has anyone else had this?

I'm back to using the Autoglym Glass polish. This gives a really deep reflection on the glass anyway and I always use it on my customers cars. They don't see the imperfections from wear and tear because the shine is that good.

PS. Love Zaino on the paintwork though. It deserves its reputation.

I have used z2 on the all the windows and did not like it on the windshield. Smearing issue!

Now I use either Aquapel or StP Visionblade on all the windows...I find it better than RainX....less smearing and beads blow off at lower speeds...It does give a nice shine after a normal wash too.

You probably applied too much or did not let it dry. You also could of had a film of something on there in between zaino and the glass.

WAsh your windows with a mixture of vinegar, IPA, and water, or use zaino glass polish, and then apply a SUPER THIN coat of zaino. Buff it off completely till dry, and if it smears, a z7 wash will level it out. Do not use Z1. I basically use what is left over on the applicator after doing the car with out renewing and I can do all the windows with that much.

Zaino is crystal clear on windows, makes them easy to clean and maintain, and really adds to the detailed look of the car.

Good luck and if you dont like it on the windshield, at least apply it to the sides and rear windows!

I use Zaino Glass Polish on all my glass surfaces and I found it to be an excellent product. Makes glass crystal clear and slick. The only limitations I've found is that it will not eliminate all scratches, just makes some less noticeable. For cleaning though, it's wonderful!

I also have used Z2 straight-up on my windows (including the windshield) and have never had any sort of smearing problem. It doesn't cause rain to run off like Rain-X but I never liked applying that anyway (talk about smearing!) I first clean the windows using the Zaino glass polish, then apply a layer of Z2 every time I do the paint (even if I put Z5 on the paint I put Z2 on the glass.) I also hit it with Z6 lightly after washing. I think the glass looks great, but there is one thing that I have noticed after using Zaino glass polish. Seems like it makes small pits in the glass more noticeable. Kind of annoying when the sun hits just right.

i notice how often you guys use paint thickness gauges before you start a paint correction. i only do my own vehicles but i still don't wanna go through the clearcoat. what kind do you use and how much should i expect to pay...

The Highline II is a great medium priced PTG. Sells for around $225

I also have the Highline II gauge but you have to remember that it only measures total thickness, not just the paint thickness.
The more expensive (like in the thousands) measure the individual layers separately, and maybe not even perfectly accurate.

Just do this, look carefully at your paint under the best light you can, and see if the clearcoat is all evenly smooth. If it starts to look a little grainy, then you are probably getting to the end of it at that spot, so be careful.

Also, before paint gauges, people just used common sense, looked at the paint very carefully, got as much history on the car as possible on how many times it had been rubbed out, etc., and just went with it.

Now I know, that in the olden days, there was much more paint thickness, better paint, because it had lots of nice solvents in it, and today's paint is now water based, and not nearly as thick, less resilient to rocks, etc.., but it is still better overall, and has alot more advantages too.

If this is for your personal cars, and you have a good idea how much paint has NOT been rubbed off with very agressive compounds, wool pads, etc., then you may not ever need a gauge anyway..

DeFelsko makes the most expensive ptg's I believe, and they have a model that measures all the different materials, separately..

Good luck !
