Paint feels rough after first major cleaning of the year?

I just started a weekend detail of my car. I purchased a used 2007 metallic black BMW this past Noverber. The temp finally hit 50 today in the NJ so I broke out the detailing products. Paint looked good so I washed car, clayed with new Ice product (picked up locally since I did not have clay handy), used porter cable, Meg 205 and polishing pad to get the paint ready for Wolfgang Fuzion wax. The left front panel felt rough to the touch. Pulled out some 4star UPP to see if I could get the paint to feel slick to the touch. Nope. I am wondering if it was in an accident and repainted or is that how the BMW metallic paint feels? The car fax did not show any accident but that does not mean anything. Any recommendations to get the paint to feel slick? Thanks.
 
Rough as in my fingers grab when I rub my hand across the paint. It does not feel smooth. It's like my car did not shave. In the past when I used a Klasse or UPP my hand just slid over the paint, my hand now catches.
 
I have 105 but am nervous using it on the black paint. I am a weekend warrior and the 105 is aggressive.

Well 205 is a finishing polish and won't do anything, but clear up hazing and light marring.
 
Sounds like you should find a pro on this forum and go to them. You could easily cause serious damage to the paint using 105 is you don't have experience. This might be the model with the ultra butter soft paint, so be VERY careful. Buying a black BMW for use in the NE is not a good idea, especially if this is the horrible butter paint.
 
If it's metallic, it's Black Sapphire Metallic which is a hard paint. 105 will be fine on it. As said above, 205 is essentially a finishing polish. You need something more aggressive to handle it. :)



My car is Jet Black, which is BMW's super soft non-metallic paint, and requires extra care and attention. I have had BSM in the past though, and it's pretty hard. Since you have 105, give it a try with light pressure and a light cutting pad to see if it helps.
 
Today was another beautiful day in Jersey. Next week we get an extra hour of light to detail and wash the car. Clay is really a great product. I never really used it before. Went out and clayed the panel again and it worked. Polished with 205 and we are good to go. Spent today waxing, sealing and trying to get the chrome exhaust cleaned up. Car is a turbo and this stuff is tough to get off. It is baked on. Using Eagle Never dull for starts. Might need to get something more aggressive. Thanks for everyones imput.

Yeah, the tips on these cars can get dirty quick. Never Dull works well if the tips aren't too bad, but you may need to step up to #0000 steel wool and something like Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish or P21S Metal Polish. I put wheel wax on mine - keeps them clean longer and makes future cleanings easier.
 
If the "ICE" clay that you are using is that kind of liquid clay stuff throw it in the trash and get some real clay. I had a customer bring me a car that he used the stuff on and I showed him the difference between that and real clay and it's night and day.
