Paint Chips and Polish/Wax Residue

A few months ago I did a full detail on my father's Volvo S70. I used DACP to get all the swirls out, but could do nothing for the literally hundreds of little paint chips all over the front end and hood. The problem is the polish/wax residue in paint chips made the otherwise flawless paint look horrible (white residue on maroon paint).

Is there anything I can do to easilly remove the residue that's in there now? I was thinking of using prepsol to get the residue out and then appying some sealant that won't leave a white residue in place of a wax.

Any thoughts on a process or product I can use for this situation?

Claying will remove the wax from chips quick and easy but it will also remove any wax on the surface of the paint. The only wax/sealant I've used to date that doesn't leave any residue in a chip is Zaino.

If your patient and gentle you can use a tootpick and remove the wax from each chip but this isn't quick or easy.

MBZ, thanks for the clay suggestion. I tried that and while it got some of the residue out, it still left the majority of it in the deep recesses of the chip.

Any other suggestions on how to easilly get the residue out? I don't see myself spending hours with a toothpick and 200 paint chips. Maybe some sort of solvent and soft brush?

Once I get the residue out, I think a sealant like AIO might work.

Thanks again,

Michael

I have an alcohol based solvent that is labelled as bug and tar remover. On the back, it also says that it can be used as a prep before painting. I wet a Q-tip with this stuff and dap each of the paint chips. You can clean up a large number of chips in this way in a short amount of time. It also leaves wax on the surrounding paint.

mpauly - Yeah, if the clay didn't do it, you're looking at a solvent like PrepSol. Besides using a product that doesn't leave much residue (AIO+SG is a good idea), you can try the wipe-on-wipe-off method. I've used this with decent results (Re chips), even with products like Collinite paste wax.

Maybe it's time for your father to spring for some paintwork.
