Paint chip repair on door edge

Does anybody have a good method of repairing a small paint chip on the edge of a car door? The two choices that come to mind are just filliing in the chip with touch up paint or using Langka with touch up paint. I'd prefer not to start wet sanding, particularly at the edge of a door.

I think Langka would be tough to use on an edge. Touch up and sanding may be your best bet. As with any painting, make sure the surface is totally free of all coatings (wax) before painting.
 
You can touch it up carefully and not really need to sand it, cause its a hard to see area. My grandpa did a really half-assed job on his touchup, and even I didn't notice it till he pointed it out. Just use really thin coats, and try to fill it as exactly as possible.
 
Question: What if I didn't notice the chip cuz it was so small, and now there is some rust in the tiny tiny chip area? Should I use touch up over it?
 
If there is rust starting , you need to sand the rust away , mask all but the chip and about 1/2 " around and use acid etch primer before painting it .

Blend the primer in by sanding away the edges and lightly scuff it with 400 wet or 600 dry .

Then paint .

Otherwise the rust will continue growing under the paint

Ok...so maybe I should get my body shop to do it if they are doing other stuff to the car on Monday?

Prevention is key! 3M paint protection film.

Seriously, touch up paint hides well on the edges. But if there is any rust or bare metal, you need to sand and build it back up with primer before putting down color.

So you wrap your 3M around the door edge?



I have it on the front of my car and I love it! Luckily, I have some extra material that I could do it with.



How wide on each side of the door should the strip be? Half inch?

It kind of depends on what the crimp on the BACKSIDE of the door edge looks like. If you have a good clean line, then you can use a little more than about 3/4" wide. But some crimps have lots of adhesive bumps and kinks that don't let the film lie flat too well. In that case you could use 1/2" or even less - just enough to wrap around the edge to the back side. Don't sweat it too much - it is easy to redo if botched or replace if it gets damaged.



I tried a couple of strips with dry install. This is fast, but prone to all kinds of alignment problems. I re-did them with wet install (alcohol/water mix) and it came out way better.



Other great places for the left over film:

- edge of the gas filler door, also the bottom edge of the filler opening

- inside the door handle cup - you know where all those scratches from rings usually are?

- around key holes

- bottom edge of the trunk lip
