Pads: Sonus or Lake County?

Well, even after spending $700 so far this year on new everything, I've hunkered down and have decided to get a PC 7424. I've been looking at pads and cannot decided weather I should go sonus or lake county? Most of the guys in click and brag seem to use sonus, but then again there are others who swear by sonus. Pease help this orbital newbie and tell me what to go with.:D

Well, Sonus pads are made by LC to specifications. Perhaps buy one of each type from both ( for example one polishing Sonus pad and one polishing LC pad) and see which kind you prefer.

I can tell you from my experience that I find the basic three LC pads ( yellow, white and black) to do just fine.

Thanks for the quick reply Bill....man, I wish my other car forums were like autopia. I've been a member for a year but forgot the day I signed up and started looking back in Februrary and posting last month. Off topic, but you guys ROCK .

i purchased a porter cable 7424 from my local home depot today to use with my new polish. what is the difference between the aftermarket polishing pads and the white pad that comes with the polisher? do i need more than one pad?

Yeah, the pad it comes with is for light duty stuff like polishing and waxing. I'll be using some Poorboy's SSR's and need orange and green pads for those.

You need a good hook & loop backing plate and several pads. That thing they throw in the box at the factory is absolutley worthless.

The stock pad isn't completely useless.. Since you need a clean pad to hold a MF bonnet, I use that stock pad. It's always clean because I don't use it for anything else :)

I like the Sonus DAS pads - http://autopia-carcare.com/sondas.html - because they have a little indentation to hold the backing plate. I tore my LC pads after just one use due to a manufacturing defect (cookie cutter problem I think it's called), and they refused to warranty them. So I tried the DAS pads and am much happier! :buffing:

Charlie Matco - The first thing to do is a BUNCH of reading on these forums before you touch your PC to your car's paint. I feel like I'm studying for a final exam. Can't wait to test my knowledge.

I also had a tough time trying to decide which manufacture's pad were best? I took delivery on CMA's LC "constant pressure pads" and found a proplem with backing plate was too large. This causes the pads to shread. As I researched quite extensive (on Autopia), I found "Propel Pads" to be the dominate pad on this forum. You can find them at www.exceldetail.com Be forewarned, they are often out of stock due to popularity.

Good Luck

Wow... how did you come to this conclusion? I find most discussion centered around the LC and Meguiar's pads.
