Pad Questions For VW Clear

Looking ahead to spring....MY Jetta is my DD. It's got some light marring from the dealer, as I never had a chance to really go after it last year after I got it. I am planning on using 105 or Ultimate Compond, as I find 205 is only effective on very light stuff, and besides the light marring I've got some heavier stuff in some places and a few RIDS.

Thoughts on pads?? I've got the full compliment of LC pads. Should I start with white and move to orange if I need to? Everything will be finished down with 205 and a white.

Thanks.

Most all the VWs I've done have paint on the softer side, with that said I probably wouldn't go much higher in cut than orange and 105. You are going to need 205 if you have it as the 105 will cause some hazing. 205 and white or Black should clean that up. What buffer are you using?

Always start a project with the finer compound and softer pads. Do a test and judge your progress. Make adjustments as necessary. The goal is to work up to the minimum abrasiveness that solves your issues. Each job/car is different. Good luck. Play safe! :)

I'd say to correct with wool - even with the pc. Something like a 5" pfw pad. After that you can go to orange to clean up, then white or black to finish.

VW paint is is hard, I know, had a Jetta and now drive a GTI. M105 will finish down fine, a PFW pad will be great for tough areas.

Thanks. Gonna start with orange and 105/UC on my GG DA. I may just have a PFW on hand in case. Thanks for the tips everyone.

I will have to go with Thomas on this one. My VW EOS clear responded great to PFW. But trying a test spot with something lighter (not below orange in my opinion) never hurt anyone.

2.5 is a good motor, you're lucky not to have a timing belt replacement in your future! I've already started dreading that bill. But, the GTI has been the most fun car I've ever owned.

I find it best to use european closed cell foams work well on hard clears, better than american foam

though microfibre, surbuf, wool and pfw - tuff buff etc are best for the first step if the paint is really bad

I long ago abandoned any foam more aggressive than Orange LC pads. The yellow cutting foam pads are just atrocious and always seem to leave pig tails. On my GTI when I first purchased it I hit it with PFW with Uno v2 (was a while ago), then went to SiP on LC Orange, finished with Dodo Lime Prime on LC White all with a Flex 3401. Worked like a charm. That was a while back May 2010 i think. This January I decided to clean it up and all I needed was my flex again with the HD orange pad with SiP, UNO v4 on white to finish, and gave it a Opti-coat 2.0 so I dont have to touch it again.
