Pad Gone Bad

I'd Buff It
My CMA 7.5" recessed velcro pad stopped "sticking" to the backing plate. The foam is fine but it seems like the velcro part is wearing away and the sticky part is turning smooth so it won't grip the backing plate. I think I was nearing completion of my third car with this pad. I was using it mostly on speed 6 of the PC. Has anybody else had this happen, is to expect this to be the first place of failure on these new pads? Here's a picture. BTW it's not my backing plate because other pads stick just fine.

Does the backing plate work with other pads? Does this pad work with another plate? A number of things happen to "velcro" (hook and loop fastening systems). The backing plate is hooks, which grab the loops on the pad. After many cycles, or perhaps through stressing the connection (such as at speed 6), the hooks can break off, they can get debris stuck in them which clogs them up, the loop side can have the loops torn, etc. If the loop side (pad) doesn't look "hairy", you might want to check the backing plate for fibers and what-not, make sure nothing is clogging it up.

I think somebody posted a link recently to a "velcro" or hook-and-loop website recently that explains about it.

The back of the pad looks pretty filthy. I just took a look at my pad and with as many uses as they been through, they're pretty much white. Are you maintaining them? washing them after every use? Possibly there is just too much debri there for the velcro to stick.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I washed the back of the pad real good then tried to fluff it up by drying it with a terry cloth towel. Then I put on the PC and speed 3 to "spin dry" and it held on so I turned it up to 4 and it spun off after a few seconds. It does not seem to stick very well. I think it's not gonna hold on when I try it on a job next. It's not my backing plate because other pads stick fine. It seems like the back of the pad just wore down like a bald tire. Yes I used it hard maybe 5 hours total on speed 6 but I am disappointed still because everything else held up so well. These pads have the velcro "bonded" to the foam. The previous pads I used would always fail prematurly by the velcro ripping off the foam entirely.

Maybe I just a bad one. I am going to buy a couple more to find out if they hold up longer, if not I guess I''ll try the Edge pads. I like to hold speed 6 with SSR 2.5. That combination works wonders on medium swirls and marring. Thanks again or if anybody has any other ideas fire away. :nixweiss
