Pad discussion...

Tried the new Hydro-Tech pads yet? I just tried the tangerines yesterday with Prime Strong and I was pretty impressed. It's wierd how stiff they are, but that lets you use alot more pressure and they still finish nicely, like a white or even black pad. The polish doesn't soak into them either, it just stays on the surface. That lets you use less and it also seems to give much longer working time (good for something like PS). Just finished my dad's F150, which had never been polished before, using only PS and tangerine pads (didn't have but a couple of hours) and the results were really good. Working time with PS increased to something more like a regular polish (think 106FF).

I think regular red/black/white/green/orange pads still have a place if you want to do 3-steps, but the new Hydro-Techs really are different and for that reason alone are worth having. I'm going to keep playing with these. I'm hoping cyan+SIP is going to be a good combo before PS+tangerine.

I have some of the new Hydo Tech pads and hopefully will be using them on a detail of a 350Z that I have set up for next weekend. Weather permitting

The reviews on them seem to be pretty good.

Great info, wfedwar, thanks.... that Tangerine Hydro-Tech looks interesting, for sure. It says it'll cut like a traditional organge, but finish like a traditional gray. Might be a very effective pad for KBM/DA... lots of cut with a good finish. And the 5.5" one would be perfect for KBM/DA

Let's hope the weather permits!

I'm throwing way too much OCD at this whole pad thing, but now that you and wfedwar have brought the Hydro-Tech Tangerine pad up, I'm thinking it *really* might be good for KBM/DA.

From the 'geeks web site description: "It has the cutting power just below that of the Lake Country orange light cutting pad, and the tangerine pad leaves a finish like you'd achieve with a gray finishing pad."

So you have the cutting power of an orange pad, and the finishing power of a zero bite gray? Yeah, that would be an amazing combo for M205 KBM/DA.

Looks like the tangerine pad is gonna get added to the buy list.

The blue Hydro pads rock with the 105/KBM. I like them better than the orange pad and love the way they carry the product on the top of the pad. :2thumbs:

Glad I hadn't clicked the "Check out Now" button before I saw your post. :D

I'm gonna get two blue and two tangerine 5.5" Hydro-Tech pads for KBM, and I'm gonna get two orange, two white, and two black LC 5.5" constant pressure classic flats. Must resist urge to get new backing plate...

Im eyeing the new hydrotech pads myself. I don't know why the have to call one "cyan", whats wrong with just plain ol blue? Confuses me:chuckle: I wonder if they chose these colors based on the Florida Gators football team?

If those HydroEdge Tangerine pads are as similar to the Griot's orange as I think they are, they oughta prove very popular.

I seem to be the only guy here how uses the Griot's orange with M205 and other such stuff :nixweiss

After reading this I checked PAC and they have 4, 5.5 and 6.5" hydrotech pads on a good sale. Now, if I could just sell all those CCS 6.5 pads I don't need!

I know right... I don't even use the ones I have enough to wear them out and throw them away.. I'm stuck with these things.. Good thing I don't have many. Most were just freebies that were added to other orders.

Sorry i didnt read the whole thread, but I just bought the 3m version of the edge system and in all honesty its not bad. Yes Im not too too fond of 8" pads, but they arent bad.

Griot's has so much cool stuff, I'm afraid to start ordering, for fear I'd never stop. Kinda like Best Buy.... I'm not allowed to go there without adult supervision.

Isn't the new difference in pads the open cell and close cell idea. The new closed cell keep the polish on the surface of the pad so the KBM rocks with them. correct me if I'm wrong. I think the hydro, sonus, and 3m euro use this closed cell? I have heard rumors that so does megs......I really like the megs yellow and black. I love PFW yellow black combo. I am learning to love the megs pads more and more, the size does not bother me.

Cheers,

GREG

I believe the Megs yellow and tan pads are open celled foam unless they've been changed. The LC white is a closed cell type of foam.

Er...I don't get it...that seems to be your polisher on the right...how are you going to drive the hex in the Edge pads with what looks like a round end??

LC sure touts the closed-cell thing with the Hydros.

The Meg's pads... are you talking about the Soft Buff 2.0's? Man, I wish you were closer to St. George... I'm finally up to doing some serious detailing!

Yes the polisher is on the right, dewalt rotary. The 3m piece has a sleeve on it to protect the end that connects to the pad. The wing that comes out closer to the polisher allows you to pull up toward the polisher and it release the pad.

If you want me to get more pics of the 3m Edge system let me know.

I get around that by having Accumulatorette order a lot of my Griot's stuff for gifts :D Between her and my late father my shop looks like a [darn] Griot's ad!

And, heh heh...hey, you're not supposed to express enthusiasm for Griot's; "don't you know it's all over-priced" :chuckle

Cool, I look forward to hearing what you think of 'em. I even wonder how they'd work with that M105 v2.0 I sent you  That's something I've never tried...

Thanks for posting that, guess 3M is carrying on with the idea. That's the better of the two Edge adaptors, looks a *lot* better than my cheapie model.
