P21S Wheel cleaner vs Griot's : a simple comparison

I can compare them because they are both wheel cleaners . Seriously though, Eagle one is not acidic, it does give you a warning about not using it on non factory painted wheels. Clear coated wheels are fine though.



Though it's not acidic it might be very basic, I don't know, I don't have litmus paper hanging around to test.

....according to information from the MSDS, Eagle One contains both hydroxyacetic and oxalic acid. Apparently, it's highly alkaline (~12 on the pH scale). ....not acidic but obviously not safe for all wheel surfaces as you mentioned

I just used P21s wheel cleaner today and to be honest, I wasn't all that impressed with it...Is there Anything out there that is safe on all kinds of wheels but is actually STRONG?

I'm the wrong guy to ask as the only time I clean really nasty wheels is when I do the back sides of them on a newly-purchased used vehicle.



In those rare cases I use acidic wheel cleaners and plenty of elbow grease (and then they never get nasty again).



FWIW, I don't clean my wheels all *that* frequently, at least relative to many people here. Mine often get *black* with brake dust, but they still clean up just fine with shampoo mix, probably because I keep 'em well polished and sealed.

Even post-track-day wheels just aren't a big deal (though I haven't done that in a whle)...Wash the wheels when you wash the vehicle and I'd expect things to turn out fine.

Either [Griot's or P21s] wheel cleaners are perfect for maintained wheels, and both leave a beatiful, bright appearance not found when washing with car soap or APC.

Considering our latest PMs, you and I might find a middle ground on the wheel cleaner vs. LSPs on wheels topic, huh? Though the UPPed wheels on the S8 are still gonna get shampoo (but hey, it's kinda a garage queen).

….that made me scratch my head as well but then again, I’m no chemist (it’s also been 20+ years for me ). The only thing I can think of is either the formulation has changed since that MSDS sheet was published, Eagle One is wrong (and the product is acidic), I am wrong about the high alkalinity or perhaps the combination of the chemicals/ingredients is what makes the product more alkaline than acidic?

The pH level is stated as being 13.5 and the ingredients do not include the 2 acids I mentioned earlier. ....sorry, I should have checked for later versions.

Yeah, I had a bit of a revelation when I attempted to strip #885 from the Honda before laying down fresh 1000p. I first did a Gilmour application of APC+ (strong) and let that dwell a bit prior to rinsing. I did a follow up hand-wash with AJAX orange citrus dishwashing liquid (applied with the Gilmour). If that wasn't to be a successful strategy, I don't know what would. Well, here's the beading I saw just prior to applying the 1000p....far more than I would have expected or wanted:

This #885 had been applied about 5 or 6 months earlier and looked great thru the winter season. FWIW, I think some of the better sealants are far more durable than most give credit to. So, I've applied some 1000p to the wheels on one car and applied #885 to the wheels on the Honda. I suspect these products will hold up fairly well even though I use wheel cleaner weekly.



BTW, the 1000p looks great on wheels, and there seems to be some benefit to its anti-static characteristics in this application...brake dust accumulation is reduced :xyxthumbs

I've found Griot's to do a reasonable job, and it's pretty mild. Smells a bit like cinnamon or cloves (clove oil in this stuff?). However I usually just use carwash soap & water, mixed up slightly more concentrated than I'd use for paint. I have a wheel cleaner from BMW (don't think this particular one is any sort of Meg's re-label) that works well, and is strong, but that's used less than once a year for neglected stuff. Found Autosol "Felgen-Reiniger-Gel" is at Eastwood's retail in the sale bin for a dollar... thick & works well. Never tried to find more of this though.

The FK1000P seems mighty resistant to cleaners; I undoubtedly get Rubber Cleaner on the rims while scrubbing the Yukon's tires the way I do, yet the FK1000P seems unphased, even around the outer rim that simply *has* to get cleaner on it.



Concourswanna B- Way back in the day BMW stuff was often repackaged P21s :think: Dunno if any of it is now though.

Try Breeze. Cheaper than any of the others, biodegradable and hasn't hurt any of my wheels yet. Chrome, aluminum alloy, steel or otherwise. Never spray on hot wheels just like the other brands. A gallon is about $11 at Smart & Final in California and is likely available at most janitorial supply stores elsewhere. Been using it for years and tried most everything else.
