P21s and the Klasse twins

I was intending to inport from the US, but from various reading I've decided they are essential the same as Autoglym.

Got a heater in the garage with plenty of lighting and a kettle for coffee breaks, so damp is no longer an isssue! Yippee!

I've been looking into getting a PC as well to speed the whole process up but the UK importer hasn't got back to me yet. I figure this is the only way I'm going to get the quality of finish I'm after....Plus it's a new toy(sorry tool!)

Hi Andy,

have you purchased goods from Alex before then? What sort of delivery times are we looking at for products he has in stock?

What do you use on your Laguna?

Get a quote for importing from the US while you wait and don't forget to include the VAT etc as it goes through Customs and the cost of a transformer. Bet it won't be much more than the UK price and wouldn't be surprised if it was cheaper (based on the prices I saw when looking a few months ago)

I've ordered the following from Alex

Megs #9 swirl remover

P21S hard wax

Quick Shine

Various cloths/MF's etc

I already sampled quick shine and was stunned - and that was after a simple wash (mainly coz my 4 year old daughter wanted to "help" - yikes!) I'd personally rate the shine alone as deeper than Megs GC wax and with the recent heavy rain it seems to hold up better too - plus it makes water droplets simply disappear from all glass surfaces.

I also have some clay which I originally ordered direct from Griots Garage in the US a while back but has been sealed in a tub so still pliable. My Laguna's in such a poor state it's going to need the works - clay, polish, sealant & wax so I'll try using Autoglym as a sealant before waxing.

Alex can usually get anything he actually stocks out to you same day but I think he orders the Megs from Megs UK (and they'll charge you p&P if you order direct from them!)

I think the bottom line here for UK people is not to get suckered into using a single range of products - I know before getting into the Autopia scene I was using only Megs consumer range and before that purely Autoglym - hopefully listening to advice here will enable me to buy the best combination of products available.

If any autopians are also car club members, there's a big show at Donington next June. It's actually run by the VSCC (Vintage SPorts Car Club) but the concours, sponsored by Aon who I work for, is open to any car clubs. The prizes are awarded to the club but I'm trying to twist Alex's arm into providing some products as prizes for the actual winning owners/cars. It's be great to see some autopians there! Aside from the concours, there's loads of racing - old & new cars alike (2003 saw vintage Bentleys to 2001 F1 Ferraris doing their stuff!)

I got my PC from Coastal Tools, it was about 120 including shipping but I cannot remember what Customs charged me. I think it took about 8-10 days to arrive.

Andy,

When you say the paint is in poor condition, what do you mean, lack of shine, slickness or scratches

Poor condition - perhaps a bit misleading as I'm picky to the hilt!

Paintwork has good shine but covered in swirls which IMO make shine shallower - don't know if anyone else feels that way. Removing paint defects seems to make paint deeper and glossier on its own before waxing etc.

It feels reasonably smooth but I think clay reatment never goes amiss and doesn't take for ever to complete

My main goal is to remove as much of the swirl problem as I can and then work on maximising the gloss, depth & reflectivity of the paint. I think I've got the right products as previously listed so will see what happens this weekend (weather permitting!)

Anyway, my Laguna should be relatively easy to sort out with all the autopians advice - all that's then left is other 1/2's KA3 - 1998 car with about 5 years's swirls to sort out (that's after she gets the hit & run ding fixed...) - that said, it's a cracking little car in what I thought was a straight metallic dark green - turns out it's pearlescent!

I should clarify here that some ***** hit my girlfriend's car when it was parked while she was at work. Don't want anyone thinking that she's in the habit of mowing people down etc!

I’d agree with the consensus of opinion, if it’s not a ‘daily driver’ I would go with a paint cleaner (P21S Gloss-Enhancing Paint Cleaner, Autoglym Paint Renovator or something similar) and then a (Zymol or P21S) carnauba wax.

From what you’ve said about the condition of the paint, clay and a swirl remover should give you a ‘prepped’ surface to work with.

Keep us posted.
