oxidation question

How exactly can you tell whether a car is just oxidized or if its lost its clear coat. I'm detailing a car tomorrow which has very dull paint and I want to get after it with my PC and see what I can do. I'm just not too sure about whether or not it stilll has enough clear coat left to do what I want. My plan of attack is to start with a chemical cleaner (MPPP) with a cutting pad and then go to DACP with another cutting pad followed by #9 with a polishing pad. Does this sound about right? How can I test first to make sure I don't remove too much paint? By the way I don't have the money right now to invest in a paint gauge.

Clear coat failure looks like the top layer of the paint is peeling off, the base coat is exposed and looks very dull.

You don't have to worry about removing too much paint, it's near impossible to burn through the paint with a PC. You might be surprised at how gentle it is.

Your process sounds good you might even have to go over the paint with DACP twice if it is as bad as it sounds.

another way to check if cc vs base coat is to rub with wax on terry cloth in inconspicuous place...if terry cloth ends up color of paint....probably base coat...
