oxidation or clear coming off

Practice makes "PERFECT"
Cant figure out if this is oxidation or if the clear coat is starting to come off. Has some scratches also in the paint or clear. Can some one help me out here and what needs to be done?
 
Nevermind the spots cause it just had rain here just concernd bout the spoiler section
 
Looks like clearcoat failure to me. Once it starts to turn white like that, then it means that the clear is pulling up off of the paint. The only way to get that off is to sand it off. It has gone beyond oxidation and now it is toast. You could choose your favorite oxidation treatment on it and see if you can save the rest of the paint, but that white area is going to stay white and continue to spread fairly quickly across the whole spoiler.

by the way... excellent pictures. I hate it when people try to describe what the problem is without having pictures. Those pictures show the damage really well and it is really easy to see what the problem is. :bigups That helps a ton when trying to offer accurate advice.
 
The spoiler is definitely gone on the edges.

It looks as though the trunk maybe salvagable. It is too hard to tell from the pics. I would start off with a good paint cleaner first, then evaluate. AIO or meguiars medallion paint cleaner is where I would start.
 
That looks kind of silvery unlike my clear coat failure that looks more chalky. I would suggest a good cleaner on it. ColorX, AIO, Poorboy's PwC or something like that should yield good results.
 
That is because it is reflecting a cloudy 'silver' sky. Its still the same thing. Clearcoat failure is unmistakable. That is signature clearcoat failure in those pictures. Once the clear changes from red to white (or silver) then it has seperated from the paint and is gone.
 
Try this wonderful little test. Get some polish and rub it with good pressure. If you draw red paint, it's single stage and oxidation. If not, uh oh.

My clear is just turning chalky and this car looks dirty just like the MBZ that Mike Phillips did down at Meguiar's. I could be wrong on this one but I don't think so.;)
 
Its a late model Chrysler Sebring and I haven't seen one in that color without a clear coat. That is where I base my clear coat failure guess from. If I didn't know that Sebrings had clear coats and major problems with this kind of stuff, then I would say it was oxidation too. It is signature Chrysler paint quality and I've seen it several times just this year alone.
 
Its 2001 Sebring. Not for sure if its clear coated or not and dont really know how you can tell if the car is a clear coat paint . Can someone explain to me how you can tell?
 
Do you know the exact color of that car? I know the Inferno Red had a pearl coat that is similar to clear. The way you can tell if that is clear coat or oxidation is if there is an edge. If it is crusty then it is probably clear coat. If you can rub it out with some paint cleaner then it is oxidation.

What I would suggest is that you do some research on clear coat failure and see if what you have matches what other cars appear like. Or you can just go out and try the method to remove oxidation and find out for sure. I can tell you from seeing the picture what it looks like to me, but that isn't something that anyone can be sure about unless they see it in person and try a couple procedures to get rid of it before it is known for sure. Maybe it isn't clear coat failure and it is some other kind of paint damage. I've never seen oxidation on red look like that, so I am still thinking it is some kind of damage beyond simple oxididation. It may not be clear coat failure, but it is some kind of failure.
 
LOL,,,,,, OK Best i can remember is it didnt have any type of edge on it. IMO it knida looked like oxidation but then again im no expert. Ill do some research maybe and try to determine what this problem might be.
 
In Florida we see similar damaged usually it involves well water from sprinklers. A light compound like SSR2.5 will do the job.
 
I didn't want to make a whole thread on this so...On the hood of my car I have a few spots that look almost like water spots but they aren't.They aren't white spots just like little circles on the hood that are hard to see in certain lights. I have washed it and waxed it but the spots don't dissapear. Its a 1990 Mazda 626 so im pretty lucky there isn't anything more wrong with the paint besides some scratches. Anyone know what to do?
 
I wonder if that spoiler is factory or not . Could be a problem with the spoiler itself . That's only if the spoiler is the single problem area.
